Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences

Eindhoven University of Technology

PhD position in the area of Information Systems/Business Engineering

Vacancy ID: V39.2818

Intended starting date: *May 2017*

The School of Industrial Engineering of Eindhoven University of Technology
(TU/e) has a vacancy for a PhD student in Information Systems/Business
Engineering in the area of business services and process management in
advanced service environments.

*Organization*

The PhD project will be conducted at Eindhoven University of Technology,
one of the world’s leading research universities (ranked by the Times
Higher Education Supplement). It is in particular well‐known for its joint
research with industry (ranked number one worldwide by the Centre for
Science and Technology Studies). The project is located in the Information
Systems Group in the School of Industrial Engineering. The group performs
advanced research in the area of business process engineering, focusing on
business process management (BPM) and business process intelligence (BPI).
It has a strong national and international reputation for both basic
research in the academic community and applied research with industry. The
successful applicant will have the opportunity to profit from the benefits
that such an environment has to offer and to contribute to the ongoing
research.

The Ph.D. position is part of a large innovation project funded by the
European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Programme. The project
consortium comprises 37 members including companies, research institutes,
universities, and public bodies from 9 European countries, offering a
vibrant international setting that has a strong link with practice. The
partners will collaborate to design and implement safe, efficient, and
sustainable mobility solutions (for example in traffic management or public
transport), and deploy them in several cities across Europe.

*Research Project*

Within the Information Systems Group of TU/e, the PhD project will be a
part of the strategic research activity about engineering and design of
service-dominant business in an environment where multiple organizations
operate as a network to offer dynamic service-based solutions to their
customers. We have developed a framework - BASE/X (Business Agility
through Business Engineering in the Extended Enterprise) that covers all
aspects from business strategy conception to business information system
architecture blueprinting. This also includes elements like business model
design, business service specification, and business process modeling and
system implementation. The research team has been running a series of
industry and research projects on this topic in the mobility, logistics,
services, and healthcare domains.

The Ph.D. project will focus on the design and application of concepts and
theories in the fields of service engineering and business process
management, concerning topics such as service innovation, design,
composition, and implementation to realize business processes in a service
network. Within the scope of the European project outlined above, the Ph.D.
project will focus on applying the developed concepts and theories in the
mobility domain to engineer and manage novel service-based systems. As
such, the project is on the intersection of business and service
engineering, and information system design, integrating conceptual and
technical elements.
