1. Introduction

A smart city is a new vision for urban development to integrate the various sectors of the society through the use of ICT and IoT technologies. The aim is to integrate and manage a city’s resources such as transportation, health care, commerce, education, water and power, law enforcement, as well as city’s various departmental information systems. The ultimate aim is to improve the quality of life of citizens and efficiency of city’s services and processes, ensuring that citizens’ needs are met and they are appropriately empowered to affect the city’s functioning. Relevant computing technologies, social media offerings, distributed computing paradigms, mobile technology, communication protocols, and device connectivity frameworks are well established to: 1) empower the citizens to provision the e-services provided by the city; and 2) allow city officials to interact directly with the community and to monitor digital environments of smart cities. In this context, the proposed book aims to investigate development, management, governance, and monitoring approaches to building smart cities and distributed environments therein. Emphasis is also on the current and future use of distributed technologies and IoT frameworks. Hopefully, the proposed text will fill a gap with respect to smart living in smart environments and extend the existing body of knowledge in this field.
