ABOUT

This Springer book intends to present a rich compilation of real-world cases
on digitalization. With all economic and societal sectors being challenged
by disruptive digital technologies, this book illustrates how organizations
leverage their capabilities to create disruptive innovation, to develop
digital business models, and to digitally transform themselves. This book
reports on best practices and lessons learned from organizations that
succeeded in tackling the challenges and seizing the opportunities of the
digital world. The cases provide insightful examples for practitioners and
interesting cases for researchers, teachers, and students. All case
descriptions follow a unified schema, making them easily accessible for
readers.

 

TOPICS OF INTEREST

The book intends to bring together the experience of organizations unfolding
the potential of digital technologies, rethinking their business models for
the digital age, and transforming themselves. The book’s focus is neither on
academic case studies nor on offerings from consulting companies. Its
intention is to share first-hand experience organizations have made with
digitalization. That said, both academic institutions and consulting
companies may well be involved in case reports, but cases must be developed
from the perspective of the organization in focus.

 

We invite industry cases from a wide range of topics. We welcome
contributions related to any industry as well as related to
business-to-consumer and business-to-business domains. Topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:

 

Digital Disruption

- Insightful cases that demonstrate how emerging digital technologies (e.g.
blockchain, smart devices, cloud computing, virtual/augmented reality, 3D/4D
printing) challenge existing businesses

- Application of innovative methods and approaches for the identification
and selection of digital technologies against organizational context factors

- Technology assessments that evaluate the disruptive potential of new
digital technologies

- Approaches for demonstrating the value of disruptive technologies for
particular business scenarios (e.g., prototyping, minimum viable products,
smart services)

- Roadmapping for the adoption of disruptive technologies in organizations

- Evaluation of the user acceptance of disruptive technologies and
development of training programs

 

Digital Business

- Successful examples of digital business models (e.g. platform business,
sharing economy, social media, smart products and services) that disrupt
traditional business models

- Identification of benefits and challenges of digitalization for
organizations and their potential for new business models

- Combination of physical products and digital services in ecosystems and
offering of product-service hybrids

- Methods for the development and evaluation of digital business models 

- Collaboration with start-ups and engagement in digital value networks to
realize digital business models

 

Digital Transformation

- Demonstration of how organizations successfully transformed to a digital
enterprise

- Development of strategies and transformation paths for structured and
targeted digital change

- Development and implementation of novel organizational setups (e.g. bi- or
multi-modal IT) and processes (e.g. agile business process management, agile
project management) 

- Definition and implementation of new roles (e.g. Chief Digital officer)
for the digital age

- New paradigms and approaches for management, leadership, and performance
management in the digital age

- Change management and workforce transformation addressing the challenges
of digitalization

- Description of obstacles that had to be overcome when initiating digital
transformation and to keep it running

 

IMPORTANT DATES

June 1, 2017: Opening the call for cases

July 31, 2017: Declaration of interest to contribute a case (via e-mail to
the editors) (extended)

September 15, 2017: Submission of cases due (via easychair)

November 1, 2017: Feedback to the authors

December 1, 2017: Re-Submission of cases due

February 1, 2018: Editing completed and manuscript to publisher

June, 2018: Estimated publication date
