3rd Post-ICIS SIG Social Inclusion (SIGSI) Research Workshop 2017, in Seoul, Korea

Wednesday, December 13, 2017, 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Call for Papers: SOCIAL INCLUSION AND INNOVATION IN A DIGITAL WORLD

In the 2017 Post-ICIS research workshop, SIGSI casts a social inclusion lens on transforming societies through digital innovation. Following the general conference theme, the workshop theme is “social inclusion and innovation in a digital world.” Social inclusion is concerned with the full participation of all individuals and groups in the normal, normatively prescribed, activities of the societies in which they are embedded. In a digital world, innovation plays a central role in societies where individual creativity, diversity, and technology combine to create economic value.

In so-called, “creative economies,” digital innovation may enable inclusion through transforming, destroying, and/or creating new shared expectations for social roles, relationships, and work, but we must also be alert to the unintended consequences of such transformations. To fully participate, individuals and groups’ activities must be congruent with value in a digital world or they may find themselves marginalized (unwittingly or not). Related to this, are notions of “assimilation” and “inclusivity”: where digital innovation provides the means for marginalized individuals and groups to participate but at the expense of existing cultures and identities and to the exclusion of the differently-abled. In this case, exclusion occurs as digital innovation transforms social processes, even when inclusion was the intent.

We encourage submission of research ideas, extended abstracts, research-in-progress, and articles related to the workshop theme of social inclusion and innovation in a digital world. In addition, we welcome relevant theoretical, empirical, and intervention submissions that relate to the mission of SIGSI. SIGSI promotes research, pedagogy, and outreach on all aspects of social inclusion in the field of Information Systems (IS). The goal of such efforts is to stimulate greater diversity of thought and personnel in AIS and the IS field overall, and participation of all our members in a more socially-aware and inclusive discipline.

Relevant research topics, include: winners and losers in societies transformed by digital innovation; access and opportunity in a digital world; the gender gap in the IS field; gender minorities, inclusion of the differently-abled, intersectionality of identities (such as ethnicity, gender and socio-economic class), socioeconomic divisions that impact access to or use of technology, the digital divide, under-served groups, and a range of topics related to human diversity, and the “haves” and “have nots” in the information society.

Submitted research can be conceptual, analytical, design-oriented, or empirical in nature. The workshop will include a keynote address, panel discussions, lightning talks., and roundtable discussions of submitted work.
