1.      Introduction

Fog Computing, sometimes referred to as Edge Computing, is the latest paradigm that extends the Cloud Computing vision. It is a distributed computing environment that fully supports the IoT paradigm and brings storage and processing of data closer to the edge of an enterprise’s network. Although, Fog Computing is similar to the Cloud model, the distinguishing Fog characteristics are its proximity to end users, closeness to the on-premise data processing devices, and its support for mobility. Fog paradigm helps to reduce internet/service latency, conserve network bandwidth, improve QoS, enhance efficiency, and provides an improved user experience. There are numerous benefits that Fog Computing promises; however, there are also inherent issues relating mainly to the security/privacy of data, and user trust and authentication mechanisms. Besides, wide spread adoption of the paradigm requires the development of novel network architectures and middleware platforms deploying new emerging communication technologies such as 5G networks; availability of edge analytics tools for IoT big data; and adoption of novel context-aware management approaches.


  1.  Suggested Topics

Focus of the book is on recent developments in the Fog or Edge Computing paradigm, existing methodologies, opportunities and issues, as well as on future directions. The suggested topics, in the context of fog computing, include the following:


•         Concepts, underlying technologies and architectures

•         Communication and network protocols/technologies

•         Mechanisms/tools for security/privacy of data; and trust/authentication

•         Frameworks/methods/models/tools for data analytics and connectivity

•         LTE/NFC/6LoWPAN and other related PHY technologies

•         MQTT/AMQP and other Protocols/exchange formats/interfaces for IoT/Fog solutions

•         Transfer times, delays and failure probabilities in real-time provision

•         Links with and cooperation between Clouds and IoT gateways

•         Naming, discovery and monitoring of devices

•         Performance measurement of devices and connectivity

•         Data acquisition/storage/management and analysis

•         Big Data challenges, inherent issues and solutions

  *   Ethical, societal and legal implications
  *   Limitations/barriers with respect to the fog/edge computing paradigm.

3.       Aim and Objectives

The aim of the proposed book is to report and discuss the related topics to benefit other researchers/practitioners as well as to advance the existing body of knowledge in the proposed subject area. The objectives are:

•         To capture the latest research/practice with respect to opportunities, challenges, methodologies and approaches to development and deployment of fog computing paradigm

•         To present case Studies, discuss corporate analysis, provide a balanced view of benefits and inherent issues, and to identify further research directions and technologies in this area



4.      Submission Procedure



Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit 1-2 page chapter proposals clearly stating the objective, scope and structure of the proposed chapters - by the deadline mentioned above. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified within two weeks (in most cases) and given guidelines for full chapter preparation. Completed chapters should be approximately 10,000 words or 20 pages in length – longer chapters will also be acceptable. Full chapters will be reviewed following a double-blind peer review process to ensure relevance, quality, originality and high information content.   *   Notification of acceptance:                within 2 weeks of receipt of proposals
  *   Full chapters due date:                         within 2  months of acceptance notification
  *   Chapter reviews feedback:                   within 3 months of chapter due date
  *   Revised chapters due date:                  within 1 month of review feedback
