The focus of this special issue is research on information technology for
the informal sector in the context of developing countries. Although the
informal sector’s presence in the developed world is by no means meagre,
the themes and issues related to IT for this sector in the developing
country contexts seem stark and deeply contrasted from those relating to
the informal sector in developed countries. Such contexts are often
starved and constrained of the complementarities that technology use
demands such as human capital (Chew et al., 2010) or the ability to move
beyond traditional product and value chain characteristics (Graham, 2011)
but in contrast also exhibit the need for the legal and regulatory
environments to recognise the changing nature of digitised societies (Cruz
and Sajo, 2015).

There is no dearth of studies on specific facets of IT, especially mobile
communications, use and impact on the informal sector. Yet there is
absence of both deep analytical research which brings forth interesting
theorisation, abstraction and generalisation about the potential, nature
and impact of IT for the informal sector in the developing country
context. This special issue welcomes theoretical and empirical papers on
topics related to the theme including, but not limited to the following:

• Informal sector’s Adoption, Use, Effective Use, Appropriation, Adaptive
Use of IT
• Building B2C and B2B E-Commerce through the Informal Sector
• IT for SMEs, Micro-Enterprise, Nano-Enterprises
• IT’s impact on Rural and Urban Entrepreneurship
• Digitisation of the informal sector
• IT applications for the informal sector
• Social-media supported social-networks
• Technology value appropriation
• Debates and discourses on IT and the Informal Sector in Developing
Countries
