*Conference Theme: Smart working, living and organising*

Location: University of Portsmouth, 25th June 2018

The adoption and diffusion of information technology has passed through
decades of developments and major shifts. It has progressed from
developing and adopting single isolated systems to large integrated systems
to cloud computing. It has taken major shifts and turns with the adoption
of mobile technology, web-based services, wearables and Internet of
Things. In the IFIP 8.6 tradition, this working conference focuses on the
new developments in the adoption and diffusion of technology, systems and
the resulting information that is produced and used for different purposes.

The aim of this conference is to progress our understanding of the plethora
of new technologies that are being adopted everyday by individuals,
organisations, sectors and society in order to better understand the human
aspects of living and organising with these technologies. In particular,
we call for research from different contexts and walks of life to
understand the adoption and organising principles, the impact, the
opportunities and the challenges of working and living in the context of
these emerging intelligent devices, algorithms, analytics and other smart
technologies. We particularly welcome research that questions how emerging
technologies are adopted and appropriated in everyday life and work, and on
the impact they are exerting. Who is becoming smart, how they are becoming
smart and what are they becoming smart about? Who are the “winners and
losers” and what role does technology play? How are emerging technologies
adopted and appropriated in everyday life and what impact are they
exerting?

The conference also aims to broaden the theoretical base of adoption and
diffusion of technology in light of these new technologies and new
challenges. Hence, while we welcome papers that focus on traditional
diffusion of innovation theories, we strongly encourage critical thinking
and development and utilisation of new, non-traditional and context
specific conceptual lenses and viewpoints.

We welcome papers that focus on technology at home, in the workplace and as
it applies to the delivery of public services. We hope to move forward in
our understanding of different types of adoption contexts which include
organisations, sectors and society. Some types of organisations and
sectors have traditionally been less represented in our research and we
would encourage scholarly work in these areas. For example, not-for-profit
and voluntary sector organisations, building and construction, automotive,,
transportation and infrastructure as well as the energy sectors are all
industries where the adoption of technology has had critical impact. We
also encourage and welcome papers on general topics related to technology
implementation, adoption and transfer.

*Topics of submission may include but are not limited to:*

   - Appropriation of emerging technologies including smart and mobile
devices, wearables, cloud computing, data analytics, machine learning and
   drones.
   - Adoption of emerging technologies in different organisations and
sectors (such as government, banks, criminal justice, healthcare), homes,
   transportation systems.
   - Diffusion, transfer, and implementation of both mature and immature
smart information technologies and systems in organizations and among
   organizations, sectors, and countries.
   - Transfer of technology to be incorporated in systems for customers and
clients and in different developing and developed countries.
   - Development of frameworks, models, and terminology for information
technology transfer and diffusion in different contexts and different types
   of technology.
   - Adoption and diffusion of technology in the emergency management,
   political and criminal justice sectors
   - Identification of risk factors and barriers to success in emerging
technology adoption and strategies for addressing them.
   - Conditions or scenarios under which specific transfer and diffusion
   techniques are applicable.
   - Methods to evaluate the efficiency, effectiveness, and value of
technology transfer programs and approaches, including time and effort
   estimators and metrics.
   - Organization design and process issues related to technology transfer
   and diffusion.
   - Case studies of technology transfer and diffusion to provide instances
to guide research, development, and practice.
   - Standards and intellectual property issues that inhibit or facilitate
   information technology transfer.
   - Ethics in the adoption of Internet of Things, Big Data Analytics,
   wearables and mobile technology.
