****Extended Deadline: The new deadline for the contributions is now the 2
May 2018****

We would like to invite interested researchers to our pre-ECIS Workshop on
"Intentional Forgetting in Information Systems and Organizations"
http://ecis2018.eu/call-for-workshops-or-tutorials/.

*** Description ***
The theme of this workshop is the transfer of the human forgetting
paradigm to the socio-technical context. Hence forgetting in groups and
organizations has to be addressed along with forgetting in information
systems. The workshop therefore welcomes papers from both a technical and
an organization science background.
The creation of knowledge is tightly coupled with the ability to forget
obsolete information. The human brain has developed specific mechanisms in
the course of evolution to free capacity for cognition and information
processing. Hence forgetting is not dysfunctional but a vital aspect of
boundary definition and refinement in cognitive systems. The research
stream of intentional forgetting (Bjork, Bjork & Anderson, 1998; Lehman &
Malmberg, 2011; Payne & Corrigan, 2007) aims at controlling the process of
information removal from a source. This principle was first researched in
the field of psychology (Bjork et. al, 1998; Harris, Sutton & Barnier,
2010; Rizio & Dennis, 2013) but recent works show its potential in the
organizational (Akgün, Lynn & Byrne, 2006; Becker, 2005; Casey & Olivera,
2011; de Holan et al., 2004; de Holan & Phillips, 2004) and technical
context (Grote, 2009) for adaptive and agile systems.
This workshop shall stimulate the discussion in how far and by which means
organizations and software systems can and should forget. It addresses a
range of topics including, but not limited to:
- computer aided forgetting (i.e. information selection and
extinction)
- modeling forgetting in knowledge intensive processes
- automated forgetting in information systems (i.e. in ontology
based knowledge bases)
- reorganizing organizations through intentional forgetting (i.e.
restricting fall-back to old routines)
- learning and forgetting environments (i.e. design of
distraction-free physical and virtual learning spaces)
The workshop therefore specifically welcomes interdisciplinary
contributions connecting multiple research streams.

*** Submissions ***
We will publish all accepted papers in the open access proceedings to this
workshop. An open access fee of 250€ will apply.
Papers should be limited to eight (8) pages.

*** Important Dates ***
Submission deadline is extended to April 15th.
Author's will be notified on May 14th.
Final papers are due June 1st.
The workshop will be held on June 25th.

Please send your submissions to Christof Thim (cthim at lswi.de).

Best regards and see you in Portsmouth,

Christof Thim
