MIS Quarterly will hold a pre-AMCIS author development workshop on August
15, 2018 from 1:00 ? 5:00 pm at the AMCIS conference hotel.

The workshop is designed to provide authors with (1) feedback from MISQ
Senior Editors and Associate Editors on potential submissions to MISQ and
(2) the opportunity to discuss with editors and other authors how to
develop papers for submission and resubmission to MISQ. The workshop has a
limited capacity of 30 authors.

The workshop will include:
1. Roundtable discussion led by editors on authors? submissions to the
workshop.
2. Editors? panel discussion on developing papers for initial submission to
MISQ.
3. Editors? panel discussion on revising papers for MISQ.

There will be a $100 registration fee for the workshop.

Emotional Attachment, Performance, and Viability in Teams Collaborating
with Embodied Physical Action (EPA) Robots

Abstract

Although different types of teams increasingly employ embodied physical
action (EPA) robots as a collaborative technology to accomplish their work,
we know very little about what makes such teams successful. This paper has
two objectives: the first is to examine whether a team?s emotional
attachment to its robots can lead to better team performance and viability;
the second is to determine whether robot and team identification can
promote a team?s emotional attachment to its robots. To achieve these
objectives, we conducted a between-subjects experiment with 57 teams
working with robots. Teams performed better and were more viable when they
were emotionally attached to their robots. Both robot and team
identification increased a team?s emotional attachment to its robots.
Results of this study have implications for collaboration using EPA robots
specifically and for collaboration technology in general.

The Effects of Media Capabilities on the Rationalization of Online Consumer
Fraud

Abstract

This research develops and tests a model of online consumer fraud to
determine how the capabilities of communication technologies affect the
rationalization of fraudulent behaviors. The model is based on research
about the rationalization of fraud, media capabilities, and
computer-mediated deception. This investigation empirically tests this
model by analyzing 459 Facebook advertisements and 1,896 surveys completed
by university students. The findings indicate that the capabilities
provided by communication technologies affect the extent to which media
mask cues of deceit and dehumanize others. As a result, some media
capabilities increase one?s willingness to engage in fraudulent behaviors
while other capabilities deter those actions. Media capabilities that mask
cues of deceit and reduce social presence increase the inclination of
individuals to rationalize fraudulent activities, while media capabilities
that expose cues of deceit and increase social presence deter individu
 als from rationalizing acts of fraud. Media offering greater capabilities
for reprocessability and transmission velocity decrease the inclination to
rationalize fraud, whereas greater capabilities for anonymity,
rehearsability, and parallelism increase the inclination to rationalize
fraud. In contrast, symbol set variety does not appear to significantly
affect the inclination to rationalize fraud.

With the rising interest in Design Science Research (DSR), it is crucial to
engage in the ongoing debate on what constitutes an acceptable contribution
for publishing DSR - the design artifact, the design theory, or both. In
this editorial, we provide some constructive guidance across different
positioning statements with actionable recommendations for DSR authors and
reviewers. We expect this editorial to serve as a foundational step towards
clarifying misconceptions about DSR contributions and to pave the way for
the acceptance of more DSR papers to top IS journals.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Advances in Design Science Research Minitrack (in
Organizational Systems and Technology Track)

This minitrack provides a venue for design science researchers (DSR) to
share their work and interact with likeminded scholars. DSR is a prominent
form of engaged scholarship, which combines inquiry with a potential for
action and intervention. DSR may be viewed as having three related
subfields, from which we welcome submissions that address:

* Science of design, which focuses on creating ?new-to-the-world?
artifacts. We try to provide an outlet for researchers doing novel artifact
driven research in information systems, but also in other fields such as
industrial engineering or service design.
* Design theory studies, which focus on the development of theories about
creating new or improved systems based on kernel or grand theories. The
design theory concept was first articulated two decades ago and continues
to be developed.
* Design Research, which focuses on the study of how designers actually
conduct design activities, e.g., science of design research. Papers in this
subfield could potentially come not only from IS, but also from
architecture and design studies.

This minitrack also welcomes submissions from the entire range of
alternatives that deal with the question of integrating inquiry with the
potential of creating and shaping alternative futures. Such work extends
the boundaries of human and organizational capabilities by theorizing
and/or creating new and innovative artifacts. The building and application
of these designed artifacts produces knowledge and understanding of a
problem domain and its solutions, which is then potentially transferable to
other domains. In design science, the engagement is primarily focused on
the design and evaluation of an artifact; learning through building with
the aim to generate theoretical insights. This is often an iterative
research process and sometimes capitalizes on learning via both researcher
and subject expertise within the context of the participants? social
system. It can be a clinical method that puts IS researchers in an active
supporting role for advanced practice. To this end we
 also seek implementable and grounded action frames for engaging in such
generalizable inquiries.

Accordingly, the scope of this minitrack includes research contributions
that arise from all three subfields of DSR described above. This includes
engaged approaches, studies of the practical use of DSR approaches, the use
of such approaches to expand theory, and conceptual foundations that
significantly and cogently expand our understanding of the epistemology and
methodology of such approaches and their philosophical underpinnings. These
include:

* Developing design artifacts and design theories
* Evaluating and testing design artifacts and design theories
* Different approaches to the design of artifacts and design theorizing
* Design as a creative act in development for systems etc.
* Advancing theory and practice in designing for systems etc.
* Design experiences in organizational systems and technology etc.

LADC is the major Latin-American event oriented to disseminate computer
system dependability research advances. The LADC 2018 program will present
technical sessions, workshops, tutorials, fast abstracts, keynote talks
from international experts in the area and an industrial track. The
symposium scope includes software and system dependability research works
and technological challenges.

LADC looks for works exploring new territory, continuing a significant
research, or reflecting on practical experience. The main track at LADC
2018 is soliciting original, unpublished research papers in three
categories: (1) full research (regular) papers, (2) practical experience
reports, and (3) short papers. Full research manuscripts should explore
technology problem and propose a complete solution with results. Practical
experience reports are expected to provide an in-depth exposition of
practitioner experience and empirical studies. Short papers should present
preliminary research work (position papers), or a prototype/tool
description, outlining the architecture, implementation and usage of
substantive operational systems or tools for the research and practice of
dependable and secure systems. Papers will be assessed with criteria
appropriate to each category.

All aspects of dependable and secure computer systems and systems of
systems are within the scope of LADC, including fault tolerant
architectures, protocols and algorithms, models for performance,
dependability and security evaluation, as well as, experimentation and
assessment of dependable and secure systems. Authors are invited to submit
original papers on all aspects of research and practice on creating,
validating, deploying, and maintaining dependable and secure systems.

Frameworks and software architectures for dependability, runtime
monitoring, adaptation, model-driven engineering for the design of
dependable and secure systems, testing, verification & validation, software
certification.

Publication, Special Issue and Paper Award
In its 8th Edition, the LADC proceedings will be published by IEEE Computer
Society Conference Publishing Service and made available on the IEEE Xplore
digital library. Also, an extended version of selected papers will be
published in a special issue of "The Journal of Brazilian Computer
Society". A Best Paper Award is also a tradition in LADC and will be
selected among the submitted works.

Submission guidelines
Papers must be written in English. Research Papers, Practical Experience
Reports, and Short Papers should be respectively no longer than 10 pages, 6
pages and 4 pages, following the IEEE two-column format for conference
proceedings. The category of the paper should be clearly marked in the
first page. Authors are requested to first register their submissions and
then submit their manuscripts in PDF format at the JEMS webpage.

PROGRAMME

Conference programme starts on SUNDAY with PN COURSE organised by Jetty
Kleijn and J?rg Desel. This course will offer a thorough introduction to
Petri Nets.

PN Course will continue on MONDAY along with three workshops. ATAED [3]
workshop will offer talks on process mining, region theory and other
synthesis techniques. The use of Petri nets in the formal process of
software engineering, covering modeling, validation, and verification,
will be presented at the PNSE [4] workshop. Both workshops will share an
invited talk CHALLENGES IN BUSINESS PROCESS INTELLIGENCE: COMPLIANCE,
COLLABORATION, AND CHANGE by STEFANIE RINDERLE-MA. PDAD workshop will
show how to use Process Driven Application Development in practice. We
will demonstrate the principle Specification = Model = Application by
creating a process model, simulate process behavior and finally add
data, roles and actions.

Two advanced tutorials will take place on TUESDAY. A TOUR IN PROCESS
MINING: FROM PRACTICE TO ALGORITHMIC CHALLENGES [5] will be led by Wil
van der Aalst, Josep Carmona and Thomas Chatain. The tutorial will
provide an introductory tour to the field, necessary background and
practice. Karsten Wolf will lead the  MODEL CHECKING FOR PETRI NETS:
FROM ALGORITHMS TO TECHNOLOGY [6] tutorial. The tutorial spans the whole
spectrum from basic algorithms to state-of-the-art technology. PNSE
workshop will continue, starting with MANUEL WIMMER'S invited talk. PDAD
will also continue with practice sessions.

Opening session of PN AND ACSD conferences will take place on WEDNESDAY
morning at 9:00, followed by DISTINGUISHED CARL ADAM PETRI LECTURE ON
SEMANTIC DIFFERENCE FOR PROGRAM VERSIONS BY ORNA GRUMBERG.

THURSDAY will start with an invited talk SELF-ADAPTIVE MODEL CHECKING,
THE NEXT STEP? by FABRICE KORDON and YANN THIERRY-MIEG. CONFERENCE
DINNER ON A CRUISE SHIP will take place in the evening. The cruise
begins with the views of the historical part of Bratislava and its
waterfront and the Bratislava Castle, continues along the New Bridge and
the Lafranconi Bridge towards DEV?N CASTLE, a national cultural
monument. It was built on the site of a Roman building and a Great
Moravian castle. The castle in 1809 threw Napoleonic troops into the
air. At present there is an archaeological museum on the castle. You can
learn many interesting facts from our local guide.

MATTHIAS F?GGER will start the FRIDAY sessions with his talk CHALLENGES
OF CIRCUIT DESIGN: CIRCUITS AS ROBUST DISTRIBUTED ALGORITHMS.

SCOPE

Self-aware computing systems are understood in a broad sense seeking
to integrate the different ways in which this term is used
in the interdisciplinary research landscape. More specifically,
self-aware computing systems are understood as having two main properties.
They learn models, capturing knowledge about themselves and their
environment
(such as their structure, design, state, possible actions, and runtime
behavior)
on an ongoing basis; and reason using the models (to predict, analyze,
consider, or plan), which enables them to act based on their knowledge
and reasoning (for example, to explore, explain, report, suggest,
self-adapt,
or impact their environment) and do so in accordance with high-level goals,
which can change.

In order to most effectively use such models at runtime,
self-aware computing systems need increasingly powerful ways
of observing their operational environment and their own performance
and behavior and then building and refining their own models accordingly.
An inherent principle of self-aware computing systems is having diverse
feedback loops, which build a causal connection between
the computing system and a reflective layer.
The computing system is continuously observed and, based on this,
the system is able to update and modify its models to reason about
its goals, context, operational environment and its own resources,
decisions and actions.

To effectively and efficiently realize these feedback loops, models and
especially modifiable and updatable models at runtime are essential.
The models at run.time paradigm proposes to use runtime models as abstractions
of the computing system for the purpose of more efficient reasoning
upon both its runtime observations and learned knowledge.
Hence, models at run.time is especially looking for more innovative
approaches to the causal connection between the system and the
runtime model, with particular focus on a transaction concept for
this causal connection for such issues as timing, roll-back ability
and data-consistency.

The goal of this joint workshop is to provide a bridging podium
for researchers working in the area of self-awareness, self-modelling,
autonomous and organic computing, as well as self-adaptive and
self-organizing systems with a focus on runtime representations
that can be used by the system to reason about its goals, context,
operational environment and its own resources, decisions and actions.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

We are particularly interested in work covering
the following non-exhaustive list of topics:

- fundamental science and theory of self-aware computing systems
- languages and formalisms for runtime representations
- approaches realizing the causal connection between the computing system
and its
  reflective layer as well as a general discourse on the characteristics
  of runtime representations and causal connections
- levels and aspects of self-aware computing systems
- architectures for individual and collective systems
- interdisciplinary approaches, as for example the mutual influence (or
coercion)
  of socio-technical systems
- How runtime models can address basic principles of areas such as game
theory.
- Distributed models at run.time, i.e., having multiple, interacting systems,
  each having its own runtime model and in general, issues of models at
runtime
  in large scale systems with incomplete, partial models
- Impacts of uncertainty
- Approaches to real-time model-building, refinement
- Relevant lessons learned from bio-inspired, socially-inspired,
unconventional systems
- For those papers focusing on executable models at runtime,
  we encourage the investigation of how the feedback from the systems are
reflected
  in the executable models (so that they have causal (bi-)connections with
the systems)
- Methods and algorithms for model learning (self-modeling) and reasoning
- Self-adaptation in individual and collective systems
- Synthesis and verification metrics and benchmarks
- Transition strategies for increasing self-awareness in existing systems
- Open challenges and future research directions
- Applications and case studies involving runtime representations:
  cloud computing, cyber-physical systems, data centers, dependable
computing,
  industrial internet / industry 4.0, internet of things, mobile computing,
  service-oriented systems, smart buildings, smart city, smart grid /
energy management,
  smart factory, traffic management, autonomous robotics, and space
applications.

SUBMISSION

The workshop participants will be selected based on their experience and
ideas
related to this maturing field.
You are invited to apply for attendance by sending:

- a full paper (6 pages) on original research, lessons learned from
realizing
  an approach or experiences on transferring a research prototype into
practice,
- a position paper (4 pages) covering a well-argued vision or position,
- a demo paper (2 pages) covering a research prototype to be presented at
the workshop or
- an abstract of already published work to be presented at the workshop

All papers must conform to the double-column IEEE formatting guidelines
(https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html).
At least three PC members will review each submission.
The authors will be notified about acceptance before the ICAC 2018 early
registration deadline.
Abstracts of already published work will, of course, not be published again.

All workshop papers will be submitted for inclusion to IEEE Xplore.

NLIWoD solicits the submission of original research articles in two types:
* Full articles submissions (up to 16 pages) must describe substantial and
original work.
* Short articles submissions (up to 8 pages) must describe an original work
which may present
    + A small, focused contribution,
    + A work in progress, or
    + An interesting application case.
* Demos and posters presentations (up to 4 pages)
* All submissions must be in English and in formatted the style of the
Springer * Publications format for Lecture Notes in Computer Science
(LNCS). For details on the LNCS style, see Springer's Author Instructions.
