On the Limits of Digital Scaling: Speed Limits, Toll Booths, Dead Ends, and Mirages
Date/Time: Sat August 11, 2018 11:15 AM-2:15 PM
Location: Swissôtel Chicago, Zurich C
Sponsors: OCIS and TIMS
This PDW (professional development workshop) session engages the workshop attendees to debate and get feedback on their own research related to the limits of digital scaling. While organizations and researchers have traditionally emphasized the potential of digitalization in terms of value creation, innovation, and accelerated growth, there is a growing recognition that there are also limits to digital scalability. Imagine, for example, contemporary online social movements in which rapid scaling is often followed by an equally fast decline of movement adherents, thereby slowing - or even reversing -- the potential to effect social change. Or, how sharing platforms such as Uber and AirBNB are increasingly challenged by legal roadblocks. Applying the metaphor of a road trip to the scalability of digital phenomena, the objective of this PDW is to engage in a lively debate about what constrains the growth of digital platforms, online communities and digital innovation and how boundaries to digital scalability are enacted.
All interested participants are invited to provide an extended abstract of projects that will be discussed in lightening-round presentations. Please submit as a 1 page PDF or MSWord file to Sirkka Jarvenpaa (sirkka.jarvenpaa at mccombs.utexas.edu<mailto:sirkka.jarvenpaa at mccombs.utexas.edu>) by August 1, 2018. Please note as a subject line: Participant submission to Digital Scaling workshop.
Each submission needs to include the following:
· Name and institution of presenter(s)
· Title of project/area of study
· Brief synopsis of the study
· Brief discussion of aspects of digital scaling and how limits are addressed.
The PDW will begin with brief presentations by few scholars on digital scaling: Speakers include: Ola Henfridsson, Satish Nambisan, Johan Sandberg, Lisen Selander, Ulrike Schultze, and Youngjin Yoo.
The PDW will allow participants time for discussion and networking, and facilitate brainstorming for future research directions.
We hope you will join us!
