New platforms and platform technologies, such as blockchain, offer new opportunities for developing radically new transactional digital services. According to HBR, “blockchain could dramatically reduce the cost of transactions” by replacing private trust services with an open mode. Some proponents claim that blockchains are a novel economic institution dramatically disrupting whole industries and institutions of society. Blockchain is a transactional mechanism for “shared economy” as it naturally solves trusted recording of large-scale peer-to-peer activities. The importance of such a transactional mechanism increases with the emerging Programmable World where an increasing number of physical things become programmable and get connected (to the Net).

The workshop is aimed to be a realistic discussion forum for researchers interested in the Information Systems Science side of these technologies. Many of the emerging applications in companies are still proof-of-concepts, initial prototypes or at beta-level testing. What kinds of technical, institutional and legal novelties are on the way? What are the new challenges and the characteristics of countermeasures? What happens to customers and traditional incumbent and institutional players? What are the successful use cases, services and sectors? Will there be a killer application?

The workshop provides participants with a forum to discuss research opportunities on novel possibilities of applying distributed ledger technologies. One of the key ideas is to present a multi-disciplinary view of challenges and opportunities as there are technical, social, societal and legal hurdles to be dealt with. Workshop leaders and invited key note speakers will spark the discussion and lead the workshop.

Participants are invited to provide an extended abstract of projects that will be discussed in lightning-round presentations. Please submit the following as a 1-page PDF or MSWord file to Matti Rossi (matti.rossi at aalto.fi<mailto:matti.rossi at aalto.fi>) by November 23, 2018:
Name and institution of presenter(s)
Title of project/area of study
Brief synopsis of the study

The organizers will provide participants with an overview of the current state of research on Decentralized Ledgers and Chains.

Confirmed speakers include:
Henry Tirri, Special Advisor for BBVA on new payment platforms, https://www.linkedin.com/in/henrytirri/
Roman Beck, head of the European Blockchain Center, http://ebccenter.eu
The symposium schedule will allow participants time for discussion and networking, and facilitate brainstorming of future research directions.

Best,
Matti Rossi
on behalf of Sirkka Jarvenpaa, Juho Lindman, and myself
