Location Intelligence and Social Justice in the Chi: GIS and its Role in Equity in the Second City

In this talk, Yolanda Richards will present how in 2020, the world was deeply impacted by two pandemics: An infectious virus known by many as COVID-19 and the continual fight for racial justice heightened by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Amaud Arbury, and so many other countless victims. Like many companies, Esri responded by recognizing how GIS technology could play a role in addressing racial equity for social justice.
Yolanda Richards will then speak about organizations and individuals now leveraging the power of GIS to understand racial equity in communities and make more equitable decisions. GIS provides insight into patterns of inequality and can provide common understanding across communities to affect positive change. This conversation will address the journey of this process from the lens of the Midwest, specifically focusing on the City of Chicago in Illinois and the ways in which GIS technology addresses racial inequality.

Yolanda Richards, Esri
Yolanda currently serves as an Account Manager for Local Government at ESRI. In her role, she works closely with the City of Chicago and sister agencies to support their efforts in solving critical issues using geospatial technology. Yolanda also supports ESRI’s racial equity initiative to inform and provide resources available or agencies that tackle systemic racism and racial justice. Furthermore, Yolanda works with several programs and initiatives through NorthStar, a community organization connecting persons of African descent in the GIS and locational intelligence industry.
Although her roots stem from Southern California, Yolanda has called the Chicagoland area her home since 2011 where she lives with her family. In her free time, she enjoys strengthening her skills in photography, playing instruments, building community with others, deepening her faith, and laughing as much as she possibly can.
