*Background*

Digital technologies such as big data, Internet of Things, artificial
intelligence, cloud computing and blockchain have become disruptive and
transformational factors in many business areas, leading to the booming
development of the digital economy (*Sebastian, et al., 2017*). This is
having a subversive impact on traditional industries and business models (*Li
& Feng, 2018; Teece, 2018)*. Digital technologies, as an important driving
force for innovation development and industrial upgrading, not only bring
unprecedented management changes to traditional enterprises, but also
profoundly affect the organizational form of new ventures and the real
economy (*Sklyar, Kowalkowski, Tronvoll, & Sorhammar, 2019).*

Digital entrepreneurship is a process in which a large number of digital
technologies and information technologies are used to participate in the
identification, development, realization and improvement of entrepreneurial
opportunities (*Mcadam, Crowley, & Harrison, 2020)*. At the same time,
digital entrepreneurship is also the result of continuous interaction
between social individuals and organizations and digital technologies and
platforms in the entrepreneurial process (*Nambisan, 2017*). Based on the
vast digital market and entrepreneurial context, emerging digital
technologies affect the development of innovation and entrepreneurship
activities from individual level (*Antonopoulou & Begkos, 2020; Boojihawon
& Ngoasong, 2018)* and enterprises perspective (*Dethine, Enjolras, &
Monticolo, 2020; Faulkner & Runde, 2019*). With the increasing importance
of digitization, some exploratory studies on digital technologies and
entrepreneurship have emerged. Some studies have focused on the
relationship between digital technologies and entrepreneurship (*Steininger,
2019*). Some research focuses on the impact of digital technologies on the
digital transformation of traditional enterprises *(Li, Su, Zhang, and Mao,
2018*). Other studies emphasize business model innovation in the context of
digital technologies (*Ghezzi and Cavallo, 2020)* However, existing studies
on the relationship between digital technologies and entrepreneurship are
limited to a few exploratory and descriptive studies, and lack of formal,
quantitative research on the influence mechanism of digital technologies on
entrepreneurial activities.

Digital entrepreneurship is an emerging form of entrepreneurship formed on
the basis of the deep integration of digital technologies and
entrepreneurship, which has realized the critical transformation process
from digital technologies to new venture creation (*Sussan & Acs, 2017; Von
Briel, Davidsson, & Recker, 2018*). Digital entrepreneurship, as a
pioneering new model, has unique advantages in solving social problems.
Especially in the current entrepreneurial context with a focus on corporate
responsibility, digital entrepreneurship creates employment opportunities,
improves business practices, and drives social change through economically
sustainable problem-solving. However, existing research on the economic
model change and social change brought by digital entrepreneurship is still
a relatively narrow discussion, with a lack of more in-depth mechanism
analysis and cross-level analysis.

To sum up, theoretical research on digital entrepreneurship is a hot topic
that is increasingly concerning scholars. For a long time into the future,
digital entrepreneurship will continue to be deeply integrated with
technology research and development, enterprise transformation, and
industrial upgrading. Especially in the context of the COVID-19, some
enterprises carry out digital transformation in order to cope with the
uncertainty. However, the current theoretical research on digital
entrepreneurship is still in its infancy stage, which cannot effectively
guide the orderly development of entrepreneurial practices. Therefore, in
order to address these issues with important practical value and
theoretical significance, this special issue calls on scholars in the field
of entrepreneurship to take this opportunity to promote the theoretical
development of digital entrepreneurship, and deepen the theoretical and
empirical research of digital entrepreneurship by adopting various methods,
themes, levels, and modes.

*Possible topics for submissions*

The primary goal of this special issue is to help scholars and
practitioners think more systematically about the importance of emerging
digital technologies for entrepreneurship and social change. We welcome
interested scholars to adopt a variety of theoretical, methodological, and
multidisciplinary perspectives in their research and to submit original

   - The influence mechanism of digital technologies on entrepreneurial
opportunity development (i.e., opportunity identification, opportunity
