Dear MAB Community,

In this newsletter, we’re introducing the last of our four themes (https://mab23.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8cfdd88c1ac384d3d832dc09b&id=11a00bb5a6&e=f396b40b5a) for MAB23: Intermedial Media Architecture. We also have a profile of MAB23 Advisory Board member Kristy H.A. Kang (https://mab23.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8cfdd88c1ac384d3d832dc09b&id=06881b07be&e=f396b40b5a) and a feature on our Equity and Access Chairs.

Stay tuned for our next newsletter where we'll provide details for all of the calls for MAB23 -- papers, awards, student awards, explorations and prototypes, and workshops!

The Empire State Building is one of the most photographed buildings in the world due in no small part to its frequently changing lighting programs. The ease with which images can be captured and circulated, constituting new on-screen and off-screen spaces, illustrates the complexity of the cultural, commercial, and ideological goals that generally drive image circulation.

The Empire State Building and other examples of media architecture also feature prominently in videos promoting tourism and migration, music videos, and films. What are the historical, contemporary, and future relationships between media architecture and its related images, and what is at stake in these processes? What are the mechanics and politics of media architectural remediation?

Some areas that this theme might explore include:
* Media architectural superimposition (eg. rephotography, projection mapping)
* Documenting and archiving Media Architecture
* Social Media and Media Architecture
* Film, and Television as Media Architecture
* Media Architecture in Film and Television
* Media Architecture in Architectural Illustrations
* Media Architecture in City Branding and Promotion
* Aesthetics and Temporality of Media Architectural Representations
* NFTs in public spaces
* AR, VR, and XR and Media Architecture
* Digital Twins in Media Architecture and the Metaverse

MAB PROFILES

Kristy H.A. Kang (https://mab23.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8cfdd88c1ac384d3d832dc09b&id=a07a683a35&e=f396b40b5a) is a practice-based researcher whose work navigates the triangulation of place, geographies, and cultural memory. She received her Ph.D. in Media Arts and Practice at the School of Cinematic Arts, University of Southern California and is an Associate Professor of Urban Media Art and Design at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University, USA. Kang's research interests combine urban and ethnic studies, mapping, and emerging media arts to visualize the cultural histories of cities and communities.

“My work asks how cities tell their invisible cultural histories using digital media. I’m interested in creating diverse and inclusive public histories through community engagement and the practice of digital placemaking in order to make visible the stories of overlooked peoples and places in the city. I hope to share with fellow international researchers, planners and practitioners in Media Architecture how this field has developed in the world beyond the West, and how it has impacted cities with indigenous, immigrant and diasporic populations in different parts of the world. I’m particularly interested in learning about different strategies for fostering inclusivity, social awareness, and community engagement.”

MAB FEATURES

The Equity and Access Chairs are working hard to make MAB23 as welcoming as possible to as many people as possible. They are putting policies, protocols, and services in place for the event in order to ensure that benefits are equitably distributed and potential barriers minimized for underserved communities.

This year's Equity and Access Chairs, Tiana Osborne and Madeline Smith are hard at work developing inclusive language in calls for papers, awards, and workshops as well as pricing and ticketing options and discounts, online and on-site supports, a code of conduct, and more.
