Title: The Business Architecture Approach to Drive Successful Digital Transformations

Description

In today’s fast paced, global, and digital world, organizations have no choice but to learn to transform themselves at relentlessly faster paces. Such digital transformations generally follow the formulation of a new or improved strategy and involve a series of changes to the operating model of the organization.

Researchers and practitioners from several disciplines such as information systems, strategy and project management have proposed a number of best practices from to help organizations drive successful transformations. Yet, despite all that has been learned, the promise of strategy still falls short today.

To break from this deadlock and ensure their survival and long-term success, it is imperative that organizations change the way they transform themselves. The objective of this workshop is to present an innovative approach, Business Architecture, that can help organizations transform themselves in an effective, agile and efficient manner.

Although fairly new and research conferences and publications on the topic are still limited, the idea of the business architecture approach originates from the convergence of work done by multiple professional practices such as strategic planning, IT enterprise architecture, project management, portfolio management, organizational design, business process improvement and knowledge management. The approach comprises the following three key components:

  1. A target business architecture that defines how the organization must function in the future to be able to execute its strategy.
  2. A transformation plan, which identifies and sequences the transformation projects that must be executed during the next three to five years to improve the organization’s ability to execute its strategy.
  3. An internal business architecture practice that is responsible for architecting the target business architecture and elaborating the transformation plan, and that contributes to other activities critical to the transformation process.

In an attempt to incite research and training in the field, the objectives of this tutorial are to:

  * Describe what a target business architecture is, the building blocks it is made up of as well as provide insights as how it can be designed, model and documented.
  * Describe the characteristics of a sound transformation plan and present a methodology to elaborate such a plan.
  * Define the integration points between the business architecture and IT enterprise architecture approaches as well as how business architects can collaborate with IT enterprise architects, solutions architects and other professionals throughout the digital transformation process.
  * The role of the business architecture approach in crisis response such as COVID-19.
  * Present the benefits of the business architecture approach.
  * Discuss potential future research avenues in the field.
  * Present material already developed that educators can use to support their teachings on the business architecture approach.
