Ethical & Responsible Artificial Intelligence forSustainable Societies
Artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping the future of humanity. It isalready the key driver of emerging technologies and will continue to be thetechnological innovator in the envisioned future. Industry experts anticipateAI advances to produce dramatic changes in the service industry by 2025; whileothers expect AI to overtake humans in the near future (PEW, 2014; Cuthbertson,2020). Research on AI is prevailing all fields (Merhi & Harfouche, 2023)and is dominating science, agriculture, healthcare, military, financial andmany other domains worldwide (Gartner Inc., 2021; Tutun et al., 2023). Thus, AIhas high potentials to benefit humanity and help resolving many of the world’schallenges from poverty to environmental sustainability.
Today, there is increasing awareness and expectation that ArtificialIntelligence (AI) can help address these grand challenges that include societalinequalities and environmental sustainability in developing and developedcountries (Dennehy et al., 2021; Dwivedi et al., 2022; Harfouche et al., 2022;Tarhini et al., 2022). These grand challenges can be categorized as (i) socio-technical, (ii) infrastructural, (iii) societal ecological, (iv) legal andethical, and (v) emotional (Becker et al., 2015). Achieving the benefits of AIin addressing these challenges motivated researchers worldwide. However, thesebenefits can only be achieved if AI is used wisely, in a sustainable, ethical, and responsible way through the development of ethics and governance principlesto guide the development and deployment of ethical and responsible AI. Yet,there is a concern that the response from the Information Systems (IS) andArtificial Intelligence (AI) research communities has been ‘dismal and at bestmarginal’ in this regard (Tan & Neilson, 2021). In fact, the potentialvalue from artificial intelligence is expected to be enormous. But the questionremains: what are the costs of AI when not done responsibly?
Sustainable, reliable, effective, and human-centered AI systems requiresresponsible AI principles and perspectives not only from technological but alsoethical, legal, socio-economic, and socio-political domains. Responsible AI isthe practice of developing and deploying AI systems with good intentions in aresponsible manner, helping to empower employees, business, and society. Ethicsand governance of AI could be influenced by different cultural context. However, these cultural differences provide a diversity of perspectives, andopportunities to learn from one another. Sharing insights, expertise anddifferent perspectives on ethical and responsible AI for sustainabledevelopment is and will continue to be an important concern for the ICTOcommunity.
The 7th conference for Information & communication technologies fororganization & society (ICTO2023) aims to bring together multidisciplinarycontributions from different domains and cultures around IS and AI to advanceknowledge to achieve a better and more sustainable future for organizations& societies. This year, ICTO2023 aims at finding answers to question like:What do we want the future of work to look like? How do we want AI to changeour lives? What does it really mean to be doing AI “responsibly”? Can we doResponsible AI without worrying about the social consequences? How theprinciples of responsible AI could be applied more broadly toward achievingsustainable development goals?
We invite scholars, practitioners, and early career researchers topresent their research at ICTO2023 to contribute to the Ethical and ResponsibleAI research that leads to better and sustainable societies.
