FACETE - the International Workshop on the Foundations and Applications of Capabilities in Enterprises, Transformations and ESG Initiatives (https://www.facete.org<https://www.facete.org/>) - is a newly established workshop series that seeks to bridge the gap between the theory and practice of capability mapping, a pivotal tool in Enterprise Architecture and transformations. The first FACETE workshop, organized as part of the 16th IFIP WG 8.1 Working Conference on the Practice of Enterprise Modeling (PoEM - https://conferences.big.tuwien.ac.at/poem2023/) aims to consolidate divergent perspectives on the scientific foundations of capability mapping, including its ontology, meta-models, and notations and seeks empirical studies into its practical applications, notably in strategic and digital transformations and ESG initiatives. Accepted contributions will be the basis for active, discussion-oriented sessions, fostering collaborative research and constructive discourse. The workshop's ultimate goal is to strengthen the academic underpinning of capability mapping and broaden its practical applications. In order to realize this, the workshop will extend the call for contributions towards practitioners. With a keen focus on open discussions and practical presentations, it aims to foster a vibrant community committed to defining, understanding, and applying capability mapping in various contexts.


Call for contributions (https://www.facete.org/poem2023) - We aim to foster a dialogue-driven workshop, encouraging submissions that showcase ongoing or planned research related to the workshop's themes. However, our call for submissions goes beyond traditional academic papers to broaden the community and eliminate unnecessary thresholds. We are opening the call to practitioners as well. If you have applied a model or approach in practice or have conducted a case study, we encourage you to submit your idea for a presentation, an extended abstract, or a whitepaper.


The following types of contributions will be considered for the workshop:


1. Presentations - We invite submissions of presentation ideas, encompassing ongoing topics, cases, or ongoing studies. Additionally, we welcome presentations about recently published papers in conference proceedings or journals (Published since 1 January 2022). We aim for a maximum of 7 slides, not including the title slide, agenda/structure of the presentation slide, references slide(s) and contact information slide.


2. Whitepapers - For those working on a broader, less academic level, we invite you to submit a whitepaper of up to 5 pages that explains a concept, argues a point, or proposes a solution related to the workshop's themes.


3. Extended Abstracts

If it's too early for a full paper on your study, we welcome extended abstracts of 1-2 pages that summarize your research's goals, methods, and perhaps preliminary findings.


4. Position or Short Papers

We encourage submissions of position papers of up to 5 pages that present your viewpoint on a relevant issue or problem, or an innovative idea in the field of capability mapping. Short papers, presenting a study in a condensed manner, are encouraged as well.


5. Full Papers

We absolutely do welcome traditional academic papers with a maximum of 10 pages that delve deeply into a particular area of capability mapping research.


Topics - The topics of interest include, but are certainly not limited to:

- Ontological Understanding of Capabilities: Papers exploring the inherent nature, structure, and characteristics of capabilities, particularly in the context of Enterprise Architecture.

- Development of a Capability Meta-model: Research delving into the development of a robust meta-model that serves as a framework for understanding, mapping, and implementing capabilities.

- Defining Capabilities: Studies that propose or analyze various definitions of capabilities, with an aim to consolidate a standard definition that can be universally adopted in capability mapping practice.

- Theoretical Underpinnings of Capability Mapping: Papers that explore the theoretical basis of capability mapping, its origins, evolution, and current standing within the realm of enterprise modelling.

- Aligning Visions in Capability Mapping: Studies that propose ways to reconcile diverse research perspectives on capability mapping and strive for a common understanding that can guide future research.

- Capabilities and Business Process Management: Papers that discuss the relationship between capabilities and business processes, and how understanding this relationship can enhance capability mapping.

- Capability Mapping in Enterprise Architecture: Empirical studies that shed light on the application, impact, and challenges of capability mapping in the realm of Enterprise Architecture.

- Capabilities in Business Transformations: Papers presenting case studies or experiences of capability mapping in guiding and implementing business transformations.

- ESG Initiatives and Capabilities: Research that investigates the role, influence, and potential of capability mapping in driving and managing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives (e.g., sustainability analysis, ESG reporting, circularity analysis).

- Capability Modelling in Practice: Studies that provide an in-depth look at how capability modelling is carried out in real-world situations, including the tools, techniques, and methodologies used.

- Measuring the Impact of Capability Mapping: Papers that propose or analyze methods for assessing the impact and effectiveness of capability mapping in various contexts.

- Overcoming Challenges in Capability Mapping: Case studies or research focusing on the practical difficulties faced in capability mapping and proposing solutions or strategies to overcome these challenges.

- Innovative Applications of Capability Mapping: Studies showcasing novel or highly effective applications of capability mapping in various domains or industries.


Submission, reviewing and publication - Position or short papers and full papers should be submitted according to the CEUR-WS 1-column template (http://ceur-ws.org/Vol-XXX/CEURART.zip). This format is also recommended for whitepapers and extended abstracts. No specific formatting guidelines apply to presentations.


Accepted short/position and full papers will be published in online CEUR-WS proceedings.


All contributions will be uploaded on the EasyChair platform. Each submission will be subjected to an evaluation process. Contributions will receive a basic review to ensure their relevance and clarity and receive feedback from the reviewers. Papers aiming to be published in the CEUR-WS proceedings will be peer-reviewed according to academic standards.

Workshop format - Authors of accepted submissions, across all categories, will be invited to deliver a short presentation during the workshop (10 to 15 minutes), ​The workshop sessions will be focused on discussing these presentations, providing feedback to the presenters, and generating ideas for future research. We will conclude with a plenary discussion, where we aim to collate the insights gathered from the presentations. The goal of this discussion is to build a shared understanding of the concept of enterprise capability and the technique of capability mapping, uncovering common ground among varied perspectives. By embracing this inclusive approach, we aim to stimulate a collective conversation that will help shape the future direction of the community's work in defining and understanding capability mapping and its applications in various contexts.


Expected outcome - We aim to co-create a workshop report post-event with the participants. This collaborative document will capture the nuanced discussions, key insights, and shared understanding developed during the workshop. Our objective is to collectively articulate a vision for Capability Mapping research, incorporating perspectives from both academia and industry. The report will aim to detail an aligned view of capability mapping's current state and its potential future trajectories, with the intent to serve as a future research agenda. The possibility of this report taking the form of a collaborative paper will be explored, ensuring its scholarly value and potential for wide distribution. The form should allow different parties to contribute, effectively underwriting the collective vision.
