MINI-TRACK: The Dark Side of Social Media

DESCRIPTION
The constant and rapid pace of technological developments has propelled the already flourishing world of social media by offering increasingly more opportunities to individuals, organizations, and society. However, it has also brought pressing challenges and problems that call for exploration. This mini-track invites papers that identify and address the dark side of social media – those elements that that negatively impact people’s personal lives, disrupt the operation of organizations, and mangle the social fabric. The overarching goal is to safeguard the public by raising awareness of the adverse facets of social media use, identifying innovative approaches to address the challenges of maintaining a safe and productive environment, and promoting social well-being for the greater good. Empirical, theoretical, philosophical, review, or position papers are welcome in this track. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
* Cyberbullying
* Effect of social media on education
* Ethical, legal issues, and freedom of speech in social media
* Fake news and disinformation
* Fraud and social media scamming, e.g., online identity, financial scam(Crypto investment scam), hoax, and phishing
* Impact of social media on law enforcement
* Impact of social media on physical and mental health
* Impact of social media on democracy
* Impact of social media on public opinion polarization
* Relationship between social media and human
* Social media and personal relationship
* Social media and telecommuting
* Social media and criminal activities
* Social media addiction and isolation
* Social media, face-to-face interaction, and personal fulfillment
* Social media and productivity/job performance
* Social media on business communication
* Social media and politics
* Social media and society
* Social media and privacy concerns
* Social media and security
SUBMISSION TYPES
* Full papers must not exceed 10 pages (approx. 5,000 words).
* Emergent Research Forum (ERF) papers must not exceed 5 pages (approx. 2,500 words).
All submissions must conform to the AMCIS 2024 submission template and will be peer-reviewed using a double-blind system.
IMPORTANT DATES
* January 5, 2024: Manuscript submissions begin
* March 1, 2024: Submissions are due at 10 a.m. ET (New York)
