<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:12.0pt;
border:none;padding:0in'>Dear Allan,<br>
<br>
Saw your post to AISworld. I certainly can't speak on behalf of my
academic colleagues nor AIS but my personal view (being a bit self-critical) is
that cloud computing has shall we say "floated by" without much
notice. Most of us don't get credit for case studies unless it is the
basis for theoretical research and in some sense we are just beginning to
report research on social networking so myself included are behind.<br>
<br>
I only started paying attention to cloud computing this semester when I
convinced three seniors to compete in the qualifying round for CaseIT 2010 <a
href="http://caseit.org" target="_blank">http://caseit.org</a> It is an
international case competition for undergraduates and apparently highly competitive.
The topic for 2010 is cloud computing. I put together a reading list
(student's notes refers to the list found on <a
href="http://sites.google.com/site/hcinfosys/other-topics/cloud-computing"
target="_blank">http://sites.google.com/site/hcinfosys/other-topics/cloud-computing</a>)
for the team and coached them on how to do a 12 slide presentation. Other
than that the competition requires the coach/mentor to have no contact.<br>
<br>
They received a case about a European VOIP PBX company for the qualifying round
and in 3 weeks (in middle of our midterms) came up with a solution to revamp
their business model. The solution relied upon use of cloud
computing. And I am quite proud to say that despite competing against
information system powerhouse universities in Europe and Asia they qualified
for the 2010 CaseIT competition!!! The first team from the Middle East.<br>
<br>
I probably don't have permission to share the case but I can share the students
Powerpoint if you are interested.<br>
<br>
And if I may ask, who in Accenture can I contact about getting a sponsorship
for these students? The three of them (plus myself) are responsible for
raising travel and lodging expenses. Unfortunately Beirut to Vancouver is
an expensive route.<br>
<br>
And to your original question - now that I know a little about cloud computing
I see it as a rich area for research as the nature of information systems and
the organizations that use them will change dramatically. I touch upon
some aspects of these changes in my CAIS paper <a
href="http://aisel.aisnet.org/cais/vol23/iss1/1/" target="_blank">http://aisel.aisnet.org/cais/vol23/iss1/1/</a>
that talks about operational issues for stakeholders of a Data Storage Grid for
backing up medical images. I also anticipate that many of the solutions for
electronic medical record and electronic prescribing for the small medical
practices will be on the cloud - perhaps the only way to give one or two
physician offices such a capability.<br>

<br>
Somewhat along the lines of what you've asked for, I have a "mini-case
study" of sorts to share. Leveraging open source tools, I have been
successfully using cloud computing (Amazon EC3) as part of my own research
projects. I've written about the experience here: <br>
<br>
<a
href="http://community.mis.temple.edu/stevenljohnson/2009/11/18/statistical-analysis-via-cloud-computing/">http://community.mis.temple.edu/stevenljohnson/2009/11/18/statistical-analysis-via-cloud-computing/</a><br>
<br>
I'm pleased with the results to date and have found it to be cost effective,
too.<br>
