managers and academics in the IS discipline continue to contemplate over the
critical challenges of how to integrate technologies to transform
organisational performance within emerging economies. While striving to meet
such an objective, organisations need to consider responsible management in the
adoption and implementation of IT. Regardless of numerous research studies
offering significant empirical findings, the area of sustainability and
responsible management in Information Technology and Information Systems
(IT/IS) is currently at the forefront and a priority for practitioners and top
managers in both private and public sectors. Stakeholders (including
citizens/customers, businesses etc) anticipate private and public sector
organisations to furnish IS solutions that go beyond efficiency, effectiveness
and focus more on sustainability facilitated by responsible management.
Globalisation, environmental disasters and social hardship caused by
organisations have changed society's expectations regarding the way businesses
operate. Organisations have reacted by developing a 'total responsibility
approach' to management, combining the drive for financial results with the
goal to live up to their social and environmental responsibility. In this
context, EMCIS 2011 aims to exploit and help develop the array of different
initiatives at national and international levels, promoting the concept. <span
