Core</SPAN><SPAN style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB"> components of Living Lab milieus are: <I>ICT & Infrastructure</I><SPAN style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic"> which<I> </I></SPAN>outlines the role that new and existing ICT technology can play to facilitate new ways of cooperating and co-creating new innovations among stakeholders; <I>Management </I>represent the ownership, organization, and policy aspects of a Living Lab, a Living Lab can be managed by consultants, companies or researchers; the Living Lab <I>Partners & Users </I>bring their own specific wealth of knowledge and expertise to the collective, helping to achieve boundary spanning knowledge transfer; <I>Research </I>symbolizes the collective learning and reflection that take place in the Living Lab, and should result in contributions to both theory and practice. Technological research partners can also provide direct access to research which can benefit the outcome of a technological innovation; <I>Approach </I>represents methods and techniques that emerge within the Living Labs environment.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></FONT></P><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify; tab-stops: 150.75pt"><SPAN style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB"><o:p><FONT face="Default Serif,Times New Roman,Times,serif" size=3> </FONT></o:p></SPAN></P><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB"><FONT size=3><FONT face="Default Serif,Times New Roman,Times,serif">Part of the rationale underpinning Living Lab innovations is the desire to open up company boundaries in order to harvest creative ideas from different stakeholder groups.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>As such it has links to “open innovation”, but differs in that the focus is on digital innovation rather than business and management innovation. While Living Lab originated at MIT they materialised in Europe in 2000 as an initiative sponsored by the European Community to promote innovation on a societal basis and boost the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on">Lisbon</st1:City> strategy for jobs and growth in <st1:place w:st="on">Europe</st1:place>. The trend for setting up Living Labs is strong in <st1:place w:st="on">Europe</st1:place>, and Nordic countries play a particularly prominent role. The purpose of this special issue is to provide a platform to bring together the emerging phenomena of Living Lab. ICT development in multi-contextual settings that aims to develop practical knowledge for design highlights potential links between Living Lab and Design Science Research as well as other IS research areas such as participatory design and technology- and knowledge transfer. <SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>In contrast to more traditional IS research contexts, Living Lab focus on identifying ICT development opportunities which contribute to and enrich peoples everyday life and this includes both organisational and wider societal contexts. Much work within Living Lab is influenced by action research due to the multiple stakeholder perspectives and its aim is to contribute to real world situations.
