By “virtual worlds,” we mean 3D immersive social and gaming environments that facilitate socialization, interaction, and rich communication through embodied user experience. Virtual worlds offer users a rich environment for collaboration not only because of “traditional” communication channels such as voice, text, and video, but also because of the shared spaces in which users can interact and collaborate using his or her avatar in ways that are not possible in most other communication media. These unique features of virtual worlds have led a variety of educators and organizations to use these environments as tools to facilitate collaborative activities among students and<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>organizational members. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Because of the growing importance of these environments and the potential for their continued use in business and education, it is important to understand how the unique features of these environments enable or constrain team and organizational collaboration.
