<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Social
entrepreneurship has received an increasing attention among academics,
practitioners, firms, and policy makers because it offers innovative and sustainable
solutions to difficult social problems. Social entrepreneurs identify socials
problem that causes the exclusion, marginalization or suffering of a certain
segment of society that does not have the financial resources or power to
transform their own circumstances. The Grameen Bank founded by Muhammad Yunus,
a Nobel Laureate, is a well-known example of social entrepreneurship that uses
the power of microfinance to transform the lives of poor village people,
especially women, in Bangladesh and several other countries around the world.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">In recent years,
information technology (IT) has become an integral part of many social
entrepreneurship projects in education, health care, and poverty reduction
areas. For example, FrontlineSMS (</span><a href="http://www.frontlinesms.com/" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">http://www.frontlinesms.com</span></a><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">), a free open source software that
enables users to send and receive text messages with groups of people through
mobile phones. This tool has been used in various domains including
peacekeeping during elections, environmental awareness programs, and
agricultural information exchange, among others.<span> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">This mini track
provides a platform for IS researchers to discuss conceptual and empirical
papers on this topic. </span></p>
