He has since worked at Lancaster University where he has been Head of Dept, Founding Dean of the Social Sciences Faculty and University Dean of Research. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Founding Academician, UK Academy of Social Sciences, Member (1992) and Chair RAE Panels (1996, 2001), and has an Honorary Doctorate from Roskilde University. He has received recent research funding from DTI Foresight Programme, Dept for Transport, EPSRC, ESRC, and the Forestry Commission. He has published c35 books and special issues, c80 refereed articles and c100 chapters in books. His work is translated into 17 languages, and he has lectured in c30 countries. His is currently Director of the Centre for Mobilities Research at Lancaster that has extensive links throughout the world relating to the study of physical movement and its interconnections with the 'virtual' and the 'imaginative' (see <a href="http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fss/sociology/cemore/index.htm," target="_blank">http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fss/sociology/cemore/index.htm,</a>). He joined ICI when it was developing a new industry: making synthetic fibres from nylon and polyester polymers. Working first as a technologist then as a manager, Peter remained with ICI for fifteen years. When he left to start a second career in university teaching and research, he was manager of a 100-strong research and development group.</span><span style='color:#1F497D'> </span><span style='color:#333333'>Joining the postgraduate Department of Systems Engineering at Lancaster University, Peter Checkland led what became a thirty-year programme of action research in organizations outside the university. Initially the research theme was to examine the possibility of using the well-developed methods of systems engineering in management problem situations rather than in the technically defined problem situations in which methods had been refined. This attempt at transfer failed, and the action research moved in a different direction. The work finally established Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) as an approach to tackling the multi-faceted problems which managers face; in doing this, it also established the now well-recognized distinction between 'hard' and 'soft' systems thinking. SSM is now taught and used around the world. Its development through action research is described in many papers and in five books: Systems Thinking, Systems Practice (1981); Soft Systems Methodology in Action (with J. Scholes, 1990); Systems, Information and Information Systems (with Sue Holwell, 1998) SSM; A 30-Year Retrospective (1999); and Learning for Action (with John Poulter, 2006).</span><span style='color:#1F497D'> </span><o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:12.0pt'><span style='color:#333333'>Peter Checkland's work has been recognized in a number of awards: he holds honorary doctorates from City University, the Open University, Erasmus University (The Netherlands), and Prague University of Economics, also a Most Distinguished and Outstanding Contributor Award from the British Computer Society. He has been awarded the Gold Medal of the UK Systems Society, and the Beale Medal of the Operational Research Society.
