awareness for global crises such as rapid climate change or wastage,
accompanied by increasing demands for energy and natural resources,
individuals, organizations, and governments increasingly recognize the need for
sustainable development. MIT’s Peter Senge, for example, calls for the
“necessary revolution” – one that is not only political but
implies a paradigmatic shift towards a sustainable economy. Obviously,
challenges at a global level cannot be solved by rather reactive solutions that
target the mere symptoms rather than the underlying imbalances and potential
misbelieves. As indicated by Steve Elliot in his recent MIS Quarterly article
on environmental sustainability, organizations play a salient role in the
transformation process towards a more sustainable society; what is thus needed,
in fact, are fundamental changes in organizational practices. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><span lang=EN-US
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><span lang=EN-US
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>In this line of
thinking, in their paper in the March 2010 issue of MIS Quarterly, Watson et
al. draw attention to the “transformative power of IS”, one which
can be leveraged in order to create a more environmentally sustainable society.
That is, information technology (IT) is no longer seen as a mere contributor to
environmental problems, but, indeed, as a means to create more sustainable
organizations. In this context, it is typically distinguished between the
notions of ‘Green IT’ and ‘Green IS.’ While the former
typically focuses on aspects directly related to the energy consumption of IT,
the latter concerns the study and design of IS that aim at contributing to more
sustainable business processes.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><span lang=EN-US
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><span lang=EN-US
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>This track is
intended to further the current discussion of Green IT and Green IS and, in
particular, to provide thought leaders with a forum where they can discuss
current research that investigates how the transformative power of IS can be
leveraged at the levels of individuals, groups, organizations, and markets in
order to create a more sustainable society. Of special interest are new
evolving design practices meeting these requirements. It is our belief that
this emergent domain of IS research can particularly benefit from
solution-oriented studies that aim at solving real world problems by means of
innovative IT artifacts, as well as empirical studies that develop new
foundational theory and apply existent theory from other domains to that of
Green IT and Green IS.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

rigorous and relevant studies employing a wide variety of methods. Empirical
(qualitative and quantitative) studies as well as design-oriented research,
conceptual papers on theory development, and industry papers will be
considered. It is thus hoped that the track will provide a wide range of IS
researchers, from different geographical regions and with different
methodological backgrounds, with a forum for engaging with a topical and
relevant IS research topic.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
