The CIS doctoral program at Louisiana Tech is housed within the College of Business and conforms to its general policies for the DBA program. All students admitted to the program are offered financial support. Throughout the entire program, students are personally mentored by experienced CIS faculty in an apprenticeship-like process tailored to the individual student. The program is intensive and rigorous, and requires total dedication on the part of the student. The primary emphasis of the program is on preparing students to conduct high-quality, scholarly research in information systems. However, students are also trained in teaching methods and tactics for developing a successful career through service to the IS community. The program is designed for completion in four years. Typically, the first two years involve coursework that prepares the student to conduct research in information systems. During that time, students also act as teaching and research assistants for CIS faculty. In years three and four, students are required to teach IS undergraduate courses and conduct a rigorous research project that constitutes the doctoral dissertation. Coursework consists of three basic components: doctoral seminars in information systems designed to familiarize the student with classic and current research and theories in the IS discipline; seminars in quantitative methods for analyzing data scientifically; and seminars in how to develop a successful academic career.
Louisiana Tech?s Center for Information Assurance has been recognized as a Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. Certificate programs that are approved by the National Security Agency are offered at the undergraduate and Master?s levels. Doctoral students are encouraged to take the sequence of courses in information assurance at the Master?s level. The CIS faculty expects that academic programs in the area of information assurance will be expanding rapidly in the foreseeable future and we encourage our doctoral students to gain expertise in this area. Louisiana Tech is one of the few universities in the country that can provide expertise and support for doctoral students in this area.
