IT is needed to improve</p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">efficiency but it also enables the creation of new services, and modes of work and interaction, based </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">for instance on digital innovations and social media. There are inspiring examples of innovative </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">design, but there are spectacular failures too, especially of large scale projects, from which </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">lessons can be learned (although often not).</p><p class="ecxMsoNormal"> </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">The challenges in designing systems are arguably greater in the social than the commercial sphere, </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">given the complexity of relational work involving people. Resources are also limited compared to </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">private business, meaning collaborative work with academe is especially important, to help build </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">much-needed capacity and deliver creative and sustainable solutions.</p><p class="ecxMsoNormal"> </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">The aim of this Conference is to promote research in the social sphere, in health, social care, local </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">and central government, community informatics and beyond. All forms of relevant research will be </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">welcome, especially of collaborative ventures, whether successful or not.</p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">We are seeking to widen the community of engagement and would like to hear from social and </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">information scientists, digital and new social media researchers, systems thinkers, software </p><p class="ecxMsoNormal">engineers, as well as those already committed to the disciplinary area of Information Systems.
