<span lang="EN" style="font-size:8.5pt; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"; color:#585147">Candidates for a 3-year funded PhD studentship are currently being sought to work on a research project entitled Supporting LIFE. Funded by the European Commission FP7
Framework Programme, Supporting LIFE brings together a consortium of European (University College Cork, University of Oxford, Lund University) and Malawian universities (Mzuzu University), and non-governmental organisations (Ungweru, Luke International Norway)
with diverse experience in health information systems, primary care, maternal and child health, epidemiology & public health, knowledge management and community based education. It is a translational research project, which will be based in rural health clinics
in Northern Malawi and focuses on using mobile phone based technology to improve the assessment and diagnosis of young children with infectious diseases.</span></p>

<span lang="EN" style="font-size:8.5pt; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"; color:#585147">In Malawi the under-five mortality rate is 133 per 1,000 live births. Internationally most of the 11 million deaths per year of children under the age five years occur
in areas where adequate medical care is not available. First-level health facilities - the closest health care services available to most sick children in developing countries, are generally run by Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs). HSAs used the World
Health Organisation, Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) guidelines to assess and diagnose young children who present at rural health clinics. Given that child health is critical to the stability and wellbeing of a nation as a whole, and to meet
United Nation’s MDG4 and MDG6 goals of reducing the number of under-five year deaths by two thirds, we are proposing a three-pronged approach to combat mortality and morbidity among children in Malawi. This is achieved through the usage of 1) mobile phone
technology to serve as a mechanism for improved implementation of 2) IMCI clinical guidelines and 3) improved diagnosis of serious infections in children using vital sign data collection.</span></p>

<span lang="EN" style="font-size:8.5pt; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"; color:#585147">The studentship will conduct information systems based research on the application of electronic IMCI from an open source healthcare solution perspective; namely how
open source development methods, toolkits, and distribution mechanisms can improve collaboration and sharing of information between the HSAs and the Ministry of Health in Malawi. A small stipend will be allocated to the student per annum. The PhD student will
work under the direction of the Principal Investigator and/or their nominee(s) and will be located in the Health Information Systems Research Centre (HISRC).</span></p>
