<p class="MsoNormal">The guest editors of the international, transdisciplinary <em>
<span style="font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">Journal of Research Practice</span></em> (JRP) welcome proposals for papers in a special issue on journal rankings and their possible effects on the production and dissemination of scientific and scholarly work.
This special issue aims to provide a scholarly examination of the impetus for, and the positive and negative consequences of, the rise of journal rankings and bibliometric measures of research publications. As a part of the development of the special issue,
a symposium and webinar will be held to discuss and develop work-in-progress papers.<br>
<br>
The focus of the special issue is the examination of the impact of formal and informal journal ranking systems and bibliometric measures on research, researchers, and the university. Studies that examine the reasons for the rise of journal rankings and publication
metrics, and studies examining consequent changes to research topics and methods are encouraged.<br>
<br>
Topics may also include the political economy of publication and the rise of open access and social media as dissemination methods, the examination of research quality, changes to and the effects of pressures to publish, the fairness of bibliometric measures
of the work of individual researchers, and the impact on innovative research and scholarship.<br>
<br>
The above listed themes and topics are meant to be indicative and not restrictive and we also encourage well-researched papers examining the changing nature of scholarship as a result of managerialist pressures on research.<br>
<br>
Articles focusing on the nature or comparison of specific bibliometric measures are outside the ambit of this special issue--articles should focus on the use of rather than the calculation of these measures.<br>
<br>
The <em><span style="font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">Journal of Research Practice</span></em> is aimed at researchers from many disciplines, so articles should be written in a style that is accessible across disciplines. Final articles are expected to be
about 3,000-6,000 words. Creative formats are welcomed. Reviews of published material will also be considered.<o:p></o:p></p>
