<p class="MsoNormal">Job Summary</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The School of Information (UMSI) at the University of
Michigan is seeking outstanding applicants for a Clinical Assistant Professor
who will also provide leadership for the School's Information Technology
function. UMSI is refocusing its information technology service organization to
support the faculty, students and staff responsible for achieving the School's
mission of enabling people using information - with technology - to build a
better world. </p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">UMSI has recently completed a comprehensive information
technology strategic plan that is designed to take advantage of the
capabilities of the School?s community of scholars and the rapidly evolving
information technology services environment in which the School operates. The
School is critically dependent on reliable production IT services for its
educational and research missions. It also must support leading edge IT
capabilities to enable innovation in research and learning environments.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Because this set of activities is so closely coupled to the
School?s academic mission, the School has decided to seek the appointment of a
clinical faculty member to this leadership role. The appointment will be
composed of a 50% 9 month role of Clinical Assistant Professor and a 50% 12
month role of Chief Information Officer (CIO). We expect the successful
applicant to be a full participant in the School's academic community while
also providing leadership for the School's IT service function. To enable the
CIO to focus on strategy and academically critical IT functions, UMSI's
Administrative Director will work with her or him to support the IT group's
personnel and production management activities. We also expect the CIO to
undertake teaching, service and research appropriate to his or her half time role
as a clinical faculty member. </p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We seek a creative, experienced, energetic leader to be the
first CIO at UMSI. We seek an individual to work with the UMSI community to
define the vision for UMSI IT environment, develop strategies to implement that
vision, manage the resulting program to meet School requirements, and
collaborate with other university and college IT support units to improve
effectiveness and achieve scale economies. </p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">As a Chief Information Officer at UMSI, we seek a candidate
that is able to build and maintain strategic partnerships with the wide variety
of stakeholders necessary to establish innovative information technology
services. These partnerships include, but are not limited to, external vendors
and cloud computing services, other departmental IT organizations, central IT
organizations, peer institutions, and our own community of faculty, staff and
students. </p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Candidates will be expected to provide visionary and
strategic leadership in how the broad information needs of the School, beyond
traditional IT functions, can be addressed in efficient and innovative ways.
These information needs include effective navigation of a changing scholarly
publishing landscape, issues balancing personal privacy with advanced analytic
capabilities, innovations in licensing and sharing (such as the application of
Creative Commons licenses to academic works and activities) and changes in
digital learning.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We expect the Chief Information Officer at UMSI to take a
lead role in integrating new technology capabilities into the School's
operations to enhance the strategic use of IT to fulfill the School's goals.
The CIO will be responsible for researching disruptive technologies, and
identify those that can support breakthrough innovations for the School's learning
and research activities.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">As Clinical Assistant Professor, we seek a candidate able to
translate her or his competence and experience in IT leadership to courses
relevant to the School's degree programs. In particular, we seek a candidate
who will reinforce the UMSI's capabilities in health informatics, personal
information technology and IT management. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Candidates will be expected to make substantive creative
contributions in teaching and professional service and their work will be
expected to be consistent with the stated mission of the School. Less emphasis
will be placed on scholarly publication and a formal research record, but
candidates will be expected to achieve outstanding work at the level of
professional engagement and practice. As with all faculty, criteria for
appointment will include evaluation of the impact of the faculty member's work
in the community of their peers as well as those they serve in their practice,
but for clinical faculty, impact will be measured in ways beyond scholarly publication.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Candidates will be expected to demonstrate evidence of
excellent teaching and mentoring ability, and candidates will be expected to
play an active role in instructional development, initiation of new courses,
innovation in instruction delivery and content, and contribution to overall
curriculum design and development. The School's strong commitment to service
carries with it the expectation of service to the university and external
communities, and this service will be expected to have impact and influence on

Leadership</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">-Establish
and direct the strategic goals, policies and procedures around the use of
information technology to support the mission of the School.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">-
Effectively communicate the strategic benefits of advanced information and
communications technologies by developing information materials and presenting
briefings and demonstrations to the community. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">-Assess and
develop strategies to capitalize on external opportunities and threats around
technology and information policy.</p>

Management</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">-In
partnership with UMSI's Administrative Director, establish the necessary
management practices to ensure alignment between the School's IT strategy and
day-to-day operations.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">-Participate
in budgeting and planning.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">-Participate
in procurement and partnership negotiations.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">IT
Innovation</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">- Assess and
integrate new and emerging technologies into UMSI. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">- Expand the
use of contextual inquiry approaches to anticipate the requirements of faculty
and researchers by understanding teaching, learning and research processes and
matching them to the next waves of technology. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">- Integrate
prototyping and evaluation efforts into learning and research processes. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">- Implement
assessment activities in order to measure project and overall unit results both
qualitatively and quantitatively. </p>

the ability of the School to deploy advanced technology. </p>

Development</p>

other University information technology production units to leverage their
platforms for testbed activities and to effect knowledge and technology
transfer. </p>

campus-wide initiatives in order to enhance the School's investments in advanced
technologies. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">- Establish
and sustain partnerships with corporations, other universities, and government
agencies working on related efforts. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">-
Participate in the School's teaching mission by helping other faculty use
information technology in their courses. Create and/or teach courses that
motivate students to apply information technology to realize their
entrepreneurial, professional and research goals. </p>

faculty to enhance and support the information technology required to support
their teaching and research.</p>

Qualifications*</p>

degree in business administration, computer science, or information science or
an equivalent combination of education and professional experience. </p>

more years of progressively responsible experience leading information
technology innovation and applied research and development efforts, including
five or more years of supervisory experience. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt">Experience
in developing and delivering courses and learning environments.</p>

experience with a wide range of IT-enabled teaching, learning and research. </p>

with technology transfer processes for bringing research or teaching
