ICT-based tooling). ENviSION is a large European project coordinated by the TU Delft, which aims at supporting business model innovation by small and medium sized enterprises. Most of what we know about business model innovation is based on what large firms
do. ENviSION will advance understanding of how small businesses do business model innovation, but will also develop ICT-based tools to enable business model innovation. The ultimate goal is to bring ICT-based tooling for business model innovation to at least
three million enterprises across Europe.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family:"Source Sans Pro";mso-fareast-language:NL"><br>
The PhD researcher will contribute to various tasks in the project. The dissertation's specific focus may be: 1) eliciting design practices of small firms implementing new business models into their ICT architectures, especially when collaborating in networks;
and/or 2) action design research on the development and evaluation of the ICT platform that supports small firms in conducting business model innovation; and/or 3) large-scale survey research on practices and performance of business model innovation by small
firms. The PhD researcher must master case study, survey and/or action design research. The design research will focus on the functional design and evaluation, as actual software development is done by partner firms. The empirical work will focus on the main
interest areas of the department, i.e. e-mobility and smart energy systems. <o:p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family:"Source Sans Pro"">The core activity of the Department of Engineering Systems and Services is to understand and predict emerging technological innovations and user service patterns, and use these insights
for improved design, regulation and operation of engineering systems and services in the domains of energy, mobility and ICT.<br>
In today’s society, ICT plays a critical role in ensuring the proper functioning of systems. Systems, applications and information sources are distributed all over the world. Often data from multiple sources need to be combined, requiring the integration of
these systems. Yet information is stored in heterogeneous systems and has various degrees of quality, which complicates information sharing. The focus of the ICT section is on ICT architecting and creating ICT infrastructures that are interoperable, flexible,
robust, scalable and secure. ICT architecting is rooted in the notion that there is co-evolution between emerging technological innovations and user behaviours.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
