Conference on Technology Ethics
20.-22.10.2021 - Tethics 2021
@ Turku, Finland

As COVID-19 hastens the implementation of digital tools in virtual communication and remote work, many sectors of our societies are becoming even more dependent on the use of technology. Reactions to the pandemic have included questionable approaches to contact tracing through smartphone apps, and invasive surveillance monitoring of our working-from-home practices. Some IT-poor sectors of our societies have become cut off from education, just as high-contact sectors of our economies have been closed. These developments further underline the need for ethics and constructive debate - between different audiences - about the risks and benefits of technology for individuals and society.

The 5th Conference on Technology Ethics aims to promote networking and research as a multidisciplinary field that reaches out beyond the borders of academia. We encourage authors to consider how they wish to communicate with different audiences: academics, technology professionals, and non-professionals. Such outreach is important for fostering truly ethical use of technology in society.

The conference will therefore be scientific but casual in nature. We expect that submitted papers are scientific but hope that conference presentations of accepted articles will consider the more diverse audience.

Because of COVID-19, the 5th Conference on Technology Ethics will be a hybrid event. We hope that we will meet you at Turku School of Economics, Finland, but there will also be online options for participating.

Tethics 2021 is seeking both scientific and practical contributions from the field of technology and ethics. As we would like to encourage people from different fields to participate, issues of interest include, but are not limited to:

  *   AI ethics
  *   Data economy and ethics
  *   eHealth ethics
  *   Ethical implications of digitalisation
  *   Business, technology, and ethics
  *   Ethics and software business

  * Ethics in design and development of technology
  *   Ethics and computer games
  *   Ethics in work
  *   Teaching of ethics
  *   Sustainability and technology

We welcome both full papers (10-15 pages, or 5000 to 7500 words) and short papers (5-9 pages, 2500 to 4500 words).
All submitted papers will go through a double-blind review process. Authors of the accepted papers will be invited to revise their work prior to final submission if necessary. Both full and short papers will be published in open access format in CEUR-Workshop Proceedings under a Creative Commons licence, leaving the copyrights to the author(s).
Conference organisation by the Future Ethics research group of University of Turku.
