Background and description:
This PhD course is focused on understanding and designing Human-Centred AI (HCAI) systems for healthcare scenarios. Confronted with the practical difficulties of operationalizing user research, (co-)design, and evaluation of HCAI for healthcare, we created a module that presents different methods, shares experiences, and offer recommendations for working in healthcare settings.

The research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare has been growing exponentially, but there are very few AI-based systems that make it to the real world and everyday care. Going the “last mile” of implementing AI in healthcare, will require an in-depth understanding of the users, their context, the AI-based systems, as well as the sociotechnical uncertainties of using AI-based systems. The Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community is especially well equipped to deal with these challenges, but the specific characteristics of AI-based systems in healthcare require adaptations to traditional HCI methods.

The aim of this PhD course is to set the stage for a new wave of HCI research that accounts for and begins to develop new insights, concepts, and methods, for transitioning from development to implementation and use of AI in healthcare. The module draws on inspiration from the recent ACM TOCHI special issue on “Human-Centred AI in Healthcare: Challenges Appearing in the Wild” co-organised by the course instructors.”
