Minitrack: Issues in Global Systems Implementation [Track: Global, International, and Cultural Issues in IS]
August 4-7, 2011, Detorit, Michigan
http://amcis2011.aisnet.org/
Increasing integration of world economies has spurred growth of trans-national and multi-national enterprises. These organizations thrive on the integration of disparate information systems/resources spread around various countries. Implementation of such systems is fraught with challenges especially when the organization is venturing into developing and emerging economies. Technologies and implementation strategies used in the home country many not be readily transferable to overseas operations. Organizations have to necessarily adapt these to suit the local conditions. The unique environmental variables could range from local rules and regulations, tariffs taxes and exchange rates to cognitive issues like culture and perceptions. Moreover, technical infrastructure availability also widely varies across the world.
Mainstream IS research on systems implementations have focused on many occasions on single organization/single country implementations. Findings from such studies may not be directly transferable to implementations where the country is just not a variable but provides the context of implementation. For instance, infrastructure for systems and technical skills associated with system implementation may not be uniformly available globally. Recent developments in technologies (e.g., cellular communications, cloud computing, etc.) have provided newer avenues for organizations to circumvent some of the infrastructural challenges that were prevalent in the past and adopt newer technology architecture for global systems. Effects of these changes may also contribute to how the systems are planned and implemented in the home country.
Scholarly research in this area will greatly help both the academic as well as practitioner community. Academic community can benefit from increased understanding on the issues that are salient in global information systems implementations. Research in this area can also help the practitioners better understand and proactively plan for the implementation challenges.
This mini-track invites research in the areas of global information systems deployment / implementations.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Implementation of enterprise systems spanning multiple sites and countries
* Governance of global information system implementations.
* Impact of newer IT provisioning methods (e.g., cloud computing) on implementation.
* Reconciling disparate Accounting norms and the use of International Financial Reporting Standards in the global systems
* Cultural differences that influence decision making, perception and intentions related to information systems adoption/use.
* Differences in perceptions to e-commerce usage.
* Resistance to IT implementation across different countries/culture.
* Intention to adopt open source software across different countries/culture.
