Reflect and Redefine: Designing the Digital Future
Minitrack: Organizational and Behavioral Issues in Systems Analysis and Design
Systems Analysis and Design (SIGSAND) Track
Minitrack Chair: H. Roland Weistroffer, Virginia Commonwealth University, email: hrweistr at vcu.edu
Organizational structures and cultures may greatly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of systems analysis and design methods and approaches. For example, though user involvement in information systems (IS) development and implementation is generally considered essential for a successful development process and outcome, the most effective way of leveraging user participation or involvement may differ substantially in different types of organizations and with different types of actors. The most appropriate choice of IS development methodology may also differ depending on organizational culture, attitudes, and the formal and informal social structures in place. Many organizations have embraced newer IS development environments (agile development methods, open source, service-oriented architecture, etc.), whereas others are holding on to more traditional, structured methodologies and methods, depending on the types of projects involved, but also depending on organizational attitudes. Effective project collaboration in the improvement of technology reliant work systems also very much depends on the organizational structures that are in place, and on the behavioral attitudes of the participants.
The objective of this minitrack is to provide a forum for scholars to examine the theoretical and practical issues that organizations are faced with, in determining effective approaches to the development and maintenance of successful systems relative to the business culture and organizational structures in place. The proposed minitrack encourages submissions of all types of research that links organizational structures, attitudes, and behaviors to information systems or work systems development and improvement.
Suggested topics:
* Organizational structures effecting different project environments, such as ERP systems, knowledge management systems, or electronic commerce applications based on the internet
* Effective user involvement in different development settings, such as agile development, iterative and incremental development, or traditional waterfall development
* Social network analysis of participants and stakeholders during system design and/or implementation
* Project management strategies for effective user collaboration and/or stakeholder involvement
* Impact of organizational culture or attitudes on systems quality issues
* Relationship of organizational structure and user acceptance of systems
* Stakeholder involvement and its relationship to operational issues in IS projects (e.g. resources)
* Participant and stakeholder relationships in different political environments (e.g. outside and inside negotiation, consultation, conflicts, and resistance)
* The effect of user attitude during IS design and/or implementation
* Stakeholder involvement and its relationship to realistic user expectations
* Relationship of policies and attitudes on effective relationship management in systems development
* Procedural guidance on how to foster collaboration in systems development
* Stakeholder involvement and the effect on productivity
* Organizational culture and the use of formal modeling tools
