The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) was founded by a merger of the University of Karlsruhe (TH) and the Research Centre Karlsruhe. KIT bundles the missions of both precursory institutions: A university of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg with teaching and research tasks and a large-scale research institution of the Helmholtz Association conducting program-oriented provident research on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany. Within these missions, KIT is operating along the three strategic fields of action of research, teaching, and innovation.

Developing concepts, methods, and technologies relevant for innovators and decision-makers to create and capture value in an increasingly services-led economy the Karlsruhe Service Research Institute (KSRI) at KIT aims to be the leading European research institute in the field of Service Science. The research group Energy within KSRI invites applications from highly qualified and motivated individuals for

2 Doctoral Scholarships (1200 €/month) for three years

The research group analyses services along the whole energy supply chain, from primary energy supply, over energy conversion and energy transport to energy distribution and energy use. The rearrangement of the energy system as a result of the ambitious targets concerning the expansion of renewable energy on a European as well as on a national level, accompanied by the trend towards an increasingly decentralized energy supply structure, has a significant impact on the future development of energy service requirements and, consequently, constitutes a particular challenge. For instance, the effects resulting from a conversion of traditional energy suppliers to energy service providers are of special interest in this context. The research group provides an internationally unique opportunity to become an outstanding researcher in the field of energy services.

Successful candidates are expected to work in one of the following research projects:

· Services in the field of smart grids / smart markets: Research concerns different possible developments from existing central market structures to distributed systems focusing on appropriate market integrations of local energy supply and demand. Information and communication technology takes a key role in this context. Therefore, research in the field of smart grids / smart markets shall concentrate on the analysis of platform based solutions supporting the interaction of actors on different levels of the value chain and on comparing alternative platform designs. Moreover, requirements concerning a potential ‘standard interface’ for such interactions shall be analyzed.

· Services in the field of electric mobility: The impacts of electric vehicles on energy systems and material flows shall be in the focus of your techno-economic and interdisciplinary research. This includes an analysis of the specific emissions (CO2 and other pollutants) due to the electricity demand of electric vehicles in different European Member states and the impact of different services on these emissions.

Application

The deadline for application is June 30, 2012. The applicant should hold a master degree in economics, informatics, business engineering or related field and should have very good English skills. Knowhow and experience related to the application of quantitative methods as well as modeling and programming skills (e.g. JAVA, GAMS) are advantageous. We encourage especially women to apply for scientific positions. Handicapped with equal qualifications will be preferred. Short listed candidates will be invited for an oral presentation and interviews.

Please submit electronic applications with the customary documentation (letter of motivation including personal research interests (one page), curriculum vitae, graduation documents, grade sheets, other certificates and a letter of recommendation) to
