Refactoring and its testing implications/crossover have emerged over
recent years to become important inter-related research topics with high
industrial resonance. Many issues and problems still remain unexplored in
these two highly-related fields incorporating topics such as the
theoretical underpinnings of refactoring, Test Driven Development,
empirical studies, refactoring of test artefacts, code smell analysis and
patterns (both design and micro) to name just a few. Refactoring also has
a growing importance in the monitoring of system’s evolution and the
propensity of systems to minimise maintenance effort and fault propensity;
the over- riding question, still largely unanswered, is whether we can
quantify the benefits of refactoring.
The purpose and goal of the RefTest Workshop is to bring together
industrial practitioners and academics in a setting where current issues
in refactoring and test crossover can be presented, relationships with
testing discussed, results from current research in refactoring/testing
disseminated and future directions distilled.
Topics of interest for the RefTest Wien workshop are as follows:
* Industrial System Experiences with Refactoring/TDD
* Pair Programming for Refactoring and Writing Tests
* Refactoring Theory and Models
* Empirical Studies of Refactoring (OSS)
* Refactoring Test artefacts
* Code Smell Evaluation and Eradication
* Design Patterns and Refactoring
* Micro-patterns and Refactoring
* Refactoring and System Evolution
* Software Metrics for evaluating the Refactoring process
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit full papers
(approximately 8-12 pages) or position/discussion papers (max 4 pages) in
Springer format, guidelines: http://www.springer.com/series/7911 format.
All submissions will be peer-reviewed.A t least one of the authors of
accepted papers should attend the Workshop to present the paper.
We welcome academic and industrial contributions.

There has been a mind shift in the 21st century software engineering for
how we build and manage software. We have been experiencing specifically
three major trends. The first is the shift towards agility and leanness in
software development. Being lean and agile is reflected both in practices
(e.g. time-boxing) and in outcomes (ability to change depending on needs
and context). The second shift is towards distribution of operations;
software engineering tasks are not co-located anymore. Organizations are
defining new business models in order to distribute their development
within a country and/or across borders to get benefits such as low cost,
high productivity, access to large skilled labor pool, market access, high
quality and time shifting. The third is the increase in scale of software
systems. Also, these trends have interactions (such as distributed in
large scale or agile and distributed in small scale). These have major
implications on estimations in software engineering.
Distributed work is relatively new and is recognized as considerably more
complex than even the most difficult co- located projects. Thus many
problems associated with geographic, temporal and cultural distance take
project managers by surprise. Recent studies show that even knowledgeable
project managers often underestimate hidden costs, risks and sources of
delay associated with distributed development. Furthermore, variations in
contexts (such as application type, development platform) limit the usage
of the collected historical data for reliable estimations. As a
consequence, a large number of project failures plague global software
enterprises. On the other hand, agility implies being flexible and having
the ability to react to changes, which are expected to occur constantly.
Furthermore, the planning horizon has changed. Only short-term plans (e.g.
the next sprint) are specific. Hence, there are concerns of what to
estimate, when, and what estimates are needed to improve agility. A key
question is, if everything changes all the time, do we need to estimate at
all? The answers to these questions will also most likely change when
taking complexity, scale and distribution into consideration when working
with agile processes.
The three above-mentioned trends are currently pushing the research
community to shift from traditional estimation approaches to new ones that
can address the needs of the 21st look for research contributions:
innovative ideas, empirical and theoretical studies, and controversial
positions in relation to estimating in agile and distributed contexts. The
topics include but are not limited to: century software engineering
practices. In this workshop, we look for research contributions:
innovative ideas, empirical and theoretical studies, and controversial
positions in relation to estimating in agile and distributed contexts. The
topics include but are not limited to:
* Estimating challenges in agile software development contexts
* Effort and duration estimating in distributed projects
* New metrics specific to lean and agile contexts
* Scope management in agile development
* Effects of specific practices (e.g. time-boxing, stand-up meetings, use
of collaboration tools across boundaries) on estimating practices
* Estimating waste and value in lean software development
* Estimation across multiple projects and teams (e.g. Scrum of Scrums)
* Estimation in the context of system of systems
* Estimating risks and uncertainty
* Simulation of agile processes
* Decision support and recommender systems

Call for papers: Workshop on Principles of Large-Scale Agile Development

Agile software development methods were made for small, co-located
development teams, but are increasingly applied in other settings. Several
large projects, with a number of teams that develop complex systems have
started to use agile methods. How to apply agile methods to large projects
was identified as the "top burning research question" by practitioners at
XP2010. At XP2013, a workshop addressed research challenges in large-scale
agile development and identified topics such as inter-team coordination,
large project organization, relase planning and architecture and practices
to scaling agile methods (see http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2507322).
In this workshop, we seek to revisit the list of research topics, and also
to deepen the knowledge of principles of large-scale agile development. We
seek contributions in the form of position papers arguing for research
needs or describing planned research, experience reports, empiricial
studies and reviews of relevant literature.
We ask for contributions in the form of 4-page short-papers. These will be
reviewed by at least two members of the program committee. After the
conference the papers should be revised and extended to a maximum of 8
pages. This submission will be reviewed by at least one program committee
member before inclusion in a separate post-conference proceedings, to be
published on Springer Lecture Notes on Business Information Processing.
The workshop will be interactive, with short presentations of the accepted
submissions and discussions. The workshop is organized as a part of the
International Conference on Agile Software Development (XP2014) in Rome,
Italy (www.xp2014.org).
