a special definition:  empirical software engineering

 

 

 Job Title, Field
and Location

  

The University of Oulu
has openings for one faculty position at the level of Full Professor in
Software Engineering. The field of the position has been specified as empirical
software engineering. The position is located at the Department of Information
Processing Science, Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical
Engineering. Altogether, there are 10 professors at the Department, in the
fields of information systems and software engineering. In addition, there are
12 lecturer positions, 13 post doctoral positions, 5 teachers, and 25 doctoral
student positions. Other permanent staff consists of 12 researchers and 2
persons in student counseling activities.

 

The research at the
Department of Information Processing Science covers a broad range of topics in
software engineering and is characterized by constructive and empirical
approaches, and by close connections to the software industry. The main
research group in SE is M-Group (http://www.oulu.fi/mgroup/). Recently, SE
research of the Department has been evaluated as “Excellent” (5/6) in an
external international evaluation of the research at University of Oulu (RAE
2013). The Department co-operates actively with software companies in national
and EU research projects. The Department is very active in the international SE
community, including International Software Engineering Research Network
(ISERN). Faculty members of the Department have published their research in
leading SE journals, such as IEEE Transactions on SE, IEEE Software, Empirical
SE, Information and Software Technology, Journal of Systems and Software, and
others. Faculty members hold editorial positions in reputable SE journals.

The Department provides
courses leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science, Master of Science,
Licentiate of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy. The annual intake of
students for the Bachelor’s degree is limited to 100 and for the Master’s
degree to 40. Teaching language at the Bachelor level is Finnish and at the
Master level English. The Department also runs international Master’s Degree
Program (GS3D), where the annual intake of students is limited to 50. The three
year’s average number of degrees awarder in years 2011-2013 was 48 Bachelor’s
degrees, 69 Master’s degrees and 7 Doctoral degrees.

 

Job Responsibilities,
Required Qualifications

 

The professor is expected
to advance the Department’s quantitative or qualitative empirical research in
industrial software engineering in two or more of the following areas: software
and system architectures, requirements engineering, service and product
development methods, collaborative and distributed SE, QA and testing, as well
as software process improvement. In addition to conducting research of high
international quality, the professor is expected to actively participate in the
Department’s teaching and strengthen research in the SE research area in
overall.­­  The professor is also expected to able to acquire national and
international external research funding.

 

The professor will be
required to follow progress in the field, pursue and guide scientific research
and carry out and develop teaching in the field, hold examinations, guide
practical exercises, mark written examinations and preliminary essays, and
evaluate research papers and dissertations. In addition to these,
administrative duties, participation in student admission and other tasks are
included in the annual total of 1 600 working hours.

 

The salary will be based
on levels 8–10 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel
in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will
be paid a salary component based on personal work performance (maximum of 46.3
% of the job-specific component). The base salary is paid for 12 months in a
year being in practice roughly 70 000–97 000 € per year, depending on the
appointee’s qualification and experience. In addition, the employee is entitled
to annual incentive and project bonuses paid on the basis of approved
reward systems and profit center specific awarding criteria in the University
of Oulu. Additionally, the employee is entitled to health care benefits.

 

Under section 33 of the
Universities Act, a professor shall carry out and supervise scientific or
artistic work, give education based on it and follow developments in science or
art and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in
his or her field.

 

The required
qualifications for the professor position include a doctoral degree, high
quality scientific or artistic competence, experience in supervising scientific
research, the ability to give high quality education based on research and to
supervise final theses, as well as evidence of international collaboration in
his or her field of research.

 

When assessing the
candidate’s merits, issues taken into consideration include scientific
publications and other research results with scientific or artistic value,
track record in acquiring external funding, teaching experience and pedagogical
training, the skill to create teaching material, other teaching merits, the
demonstration lecture, and the doctoral theses the candidate has supervised. In
addition to this, the following merits will be taken into consideration as
well: the candidate’s activity in the scientific community; when necessary,
practical familiarity with the field in question; scientific work abroad and
international activities.

The following documents must be attached to the application:

1)     a
brief curriculum vitae in English written in accordance with
the instructions given on page 5;

 

2)     a
list of publications classified as follows: (1) articles in
international peer-reviewed journals,  (2) articles in international
peer-reviewed volumes of scientific significance and articles in peer-reviewed
conference proceedings, (3) articles in domestic peer-reviewed journals, (4)
articles in domestic peer-reviewed volumes of scientific significance and
articles in domestic peer-reviewed conference proceedings, (5) scientific
monographs, (6) other original publications, e.g., articles in scientific
journals and conference proceedings with no peer-review process, and in
university or department publications;

 

3)     teaching
merits of relevance to the post concerned are requested to be
presented in the form of a teaching portfolio, or a comparable
document; in the portfolio (or other document), table of contents presented on
page 6 should be followed.

 

4)     a
brief research and action plan in English;

 

5)     at
most twenty (20) publications and other works indicated in accordance with the
list of publications, to be taken into consideration upon assessment of
applicant's eligibility and merits.

 

Before being appointed to
the position, original or certified copies of diplomas and a signed copy of
curriculum vitae are to be submitted to the faculty.

 

Referee Assessment

 

A minimum of two referees
will be appointed by the faculty to assist in the filling of the post. When
selecting the reviewers, the specialization of the candidate in his/her field
is taken into consideration, and general fairness is observed otherwise as
well.

 

The applicants will be
informed about the selection of the reviewers. Finland’s laws for public
administration will be invoked and applied for assessing any potential
disqualification of an expert.  When the reviewers hand in their
statements, these will be sent to the applicants immediately.

 

Official Employment

 

The Dean will make his or
her proposition on the basis of the recruitment committee and will submit this,
justifications and attachments included, to the Rector, who will make the
decision concerning the employment of the successful applicant.
