Job Description
The INSITE Center for Business Intelligence and Analytics, part of the Department of Management Information Systems (MIS) at the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona, invites applications for a postdoctoral research scientist position in Big Data Analytics beginning in Summer 2015.
>From pioneering one of the early MIS programs four decades ago in 1974 and championing the development of an IS Curriculum in partnership with Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), the faculty members in the MIS department at the Eller College of Management, The University of Arizona have been at the forefront of IS education and research.
With over $85 million in research grants and other state and industry support, our program has initiated and participated in cutting edge research in many fields (e.g. group systems, artificial intelligence, and data management among others). US News and World Report has ranked the UA MIS program among the top 5 in the nation, not once but for over 25 consecutive years.
INSITE is a leader in developing scalable techniques for analyzing big data arising from a variety of sources including social media, sensors, mobile applications and web based platforms. INSITE's expertise is specifically in scalable network analysis, visualization, large scale graph mining and predictive modeling. INSITE conducts inter-disciplinary multi-methodology research and the prospective candidate is expected to be familiar with statistics, network analysis, computational techniques, and Hadoop-based programming. Publication in quality peer-reviewed journals and conferences is expected.

Minimum Qualifications
* Candidates should have completed their Ph.D. (or expect to have completed prior to start date) in MIS, Computer Science or a related field.
* A demonstrated ability to publish in respected peer-reviewed academic journals/conferences.
* Programming in Java, Python and/or R.
* Experience with quantitative research methods including machine learning, statistics, optimization and graph/networks.
Preferred Qualifications
* A thorough understanding of research methods, data management and analytical techniques including statistics, networks and graphs as well as machine learning.
* Ability to formulate and write algorithms for data mining, analysis and visualization.
* Strong written and oral communication skills.
* Ability and experience with developing proposals for funded research from federal and private organizations.
* The ability to work in and manage research teams. Skill in managing one's own time and the time of others based on an established project plan.
* A deep understanding of Hadoop design principles and the factors that affect distributed system performance. Knowledge and experience with a range of Hadoop-ecosystem components such as HDFS, Pig, Hive, Zookeeper, etc.
* Expertise with graph theory, complex network analysis and visualization.
* Experience with distributed computing design patterns and MapReduce. Knowledge of NoSQL platforms (e.g., key-value stores, graph databases, RDF triple stores).
* Expert-level knowledge of data structures and algorithms including indexing, hash tables, joins, aggregations. Experience writing SQL and deep understanding of database concepts like joins, indexes, SQL optimization.
* Experience with development/deployment, testing methodologies and scalability concerns.
* Detail-oriented and must be able to think independently.
* Skill in using analytics, logic and reasoning to troubleshoot issues and find the best solutions to challenges.
