Dear All,
We request you to share this opportunity with your students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Information Systems and Data Science. We are currently accepting applications for the fall 2017 cohort, and anticipate admitting between four and six highly qualified students.
Data science, the study of extracting knowledge from data, is growing rapidly creating a need for professionals who can use insights derived from big data to make effective business decisions. Leveraging the strengths of the College of Management's faculty, the Department of Management Science and Information Systems at the University of Massachusetts Boston is offering a cutting-edge and flexible doctoral program in this field.
As the relevance of information Systems discipline to real world issues and supporting research is becoming more significant, our Ph.D. program "Information Systems for Data Science" deliberates on the applicability of extracting knowledge from data in a range of areas such as healthcare, financial services, marketing, and government. Aligned with this perspective, the program offers a solid amalgamation of three capabilities: (1) Information Systems to build an infrastructure to collect, organize, and retrieve data, (2) Mathematical/ statistical models to provide abstractions of the real world problems, and (3) Analytics to interpret and communicate meaningful pattern of data leading to solutions.
The program covers a balanced combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, focusing on the latest technology and methodology, and seminars to prepare students for tenure-track positions at research-oriented universities as well as researchers in corporate settings. Accepted students are eligible for Ph.D. assistantships, which include full tuition and fee waivers along with an annual stipend of $25,000 for a minimum of three years. We also provide conference travel support to eligible students.
All students with master degrees who are interested in information technology and data analytics are welcome to apply. Students with degrees in quantitative fields such as statistics, economics, math, computer science, management sciences, information systems, and other related disciplines are particularly encouraged to apply. A master degree in these related fields is a plus, although not required. Previous full-time working experience in related positions is also a plus.
