1.      Introduction

Internet of Things (IoT) suggests a vision of a connected world where smart devices, intelligent objects and web based systems are autonomously linked to each other via the Internet. The objective is that device connectivity would improve the quality of life of their owners/users and the efficient use of the owned devices. The underlying technologies include distributed computing, Big Data analytics, AI, machine learning, machine-to-machine communication, signals processing, global networks and security protocols. With the appropriate use of relevant technologies and protocols, IoT can result in living in smart homes, developing smart cities, driving on smart roads, automating smart devices, and, in general, regulating connected environments. There are numerous advantages that a connected world can bring; however, there are also many inherent issues that are becoming the focus of active research. These issues refer to concerns with respect to service availability, service reliability, data security, and device communication. Lack of ubiquitous interoperability between heterogeneous devices is also a major concern.

2.      Suggested Topics

The focus of the book is on the limitations, barriers and issues that are limiting the further development of the IoT and connected environments. The suggested topics include relevant issues and limitations eg:

  *   Naming, discovery, tracking and monitoring of devices
  *   Communication/network protocols and backend device connectivity
  *   Performance measurement of devices and connectivity
  *   Security and privacy across the connected environments
  *   Maintenance and upgrading of devices and embedded software
  *   Data acquisition/storage/management/analysis/management
  *   Big Data challenges and distributed computing paradigm issues

  *   Ethical, societal and legal implications of connected environments
  *   Development and barriers in relation to the Internet of Vehicles
  *   Developments and limitations of smart cities and smart living
  *   Barriers/limitations of architecture/design of connected environments
  *   Limitations and barriers with respect to smart environments.

3.      Aim and Objectives

The aim of the proposed book is to report and discuss topics, as mentioned above, to benefit other researchers and practitioners as well as to advance the existing body of knowledge in the proposed subject area. The objectives are:

  *   To capture the latest research/practice with respect to the issues and limitation of connected environments
  *   To present case Studies describing challenges, best practices and solutions

  *   To discuss corporate analysis and a balanced view of benefits and inherent issues

  *   To identify further research directions and technologies in this area

4.      Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit 1-2 page chapter proposals clearly stating the objective, scope and structure of the proposed chapters - by the deadline mentioned above. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified within two weeks (in most cases) and given guidelines for full chapter preparation. Completed chapters should be approximately 10,000 words or 20 pages in length – longer chapters will also be acceptable. Full chapters will be reviewed following a double-blind peer review process to ensure relevance, quality, originality and high information content. 5.      Important dates

  *   Chapter proposals due date:              20 Dec 2016
  *   Notification of acceptance:                  within 2 weeks of receipt of proposals
  *   Full chapters due date:                         within 2  months of acceptance notification
  *   Chapter reviews feedback:                   within 3 months of chapter due date
  *   Revised chapters due date:                  within 1 month of review feedback
