Appalachian State University (ASU) invites nominations and applications for
the position of  Dean of the Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies.
ASU seeks an innovative and dynamic leader with administrative
experience in graduate
education, strong interpersonal skills, a strong research and teaching
background,
and an ability to direct planned growth in graduate education. The deanship
is a 12-month administrative appointment that reports directly to the
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor.

The Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies was organized in 1948. The
School’s mission is to support the academic and professional
development of graduate
students by offering a challenging intellectual environment that promotes
shared learning and discovery. A supportive graduate faculty advances graduate
students’ curiosity, passion, and knowledge, engaging students as colleagues
and guiding students to become active contributors to knowledge, creativity,
and innovation in their disciplines. With an emphasis on graduate education
as a fundamental part of the University's strategic priorities, the School

The Dean will provide outstanding leadership in realizing the vision and
achieving the goals of the Graduate School and University. The selected
candidate will be responsible for administering graduate education at
Appalachian, including oversight of graduate program review, analysis of
curricula, and monitoring of national trends in graduate education. The Dean
will also facilitate other activities associated directly with graduate
students, including recruitment, advising, commencement, student
orientation, professional development, graduate teaching assistant training,
faculty development, financial support for graduate students, and scholarly
activities.

Serving as the academic leader of the School, the Dean oversees more than 60
graduate programs at the master’s, specialist and doctoral levels;
provides assistantship,
fellowship, scholarship and research funding; and offers professional
development
programs for graduate students.
Required Qualifications

●      Earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited
institution.

●      Record of academic achievement, including teaching and scholarly
activity, commensurate with appointment with tenure at the rank of
Professor.

●      Five years of administrative experience.

●      Demonstrated record of active involvement in graduate education.

●      Demonstrated record of effective leadership.

●      Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary to build
and maintain effective relationships within a diverse university community.
Preferred Qualifications and Applications

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate innovative approaches
to graduate level funding and administration, including fundraising,
multidisciplinary studies, enrollment management, online and distance
education,
and demonstrate an appreciation of challenges and opportunities in graduate
education at a Comprehensive university.
