Dear IS colleagues:
Information Systems (IS) research on culture over the last 25 years has
focused on two levels of analysis: national culture and organizational
culture. Research at the level of occupational culture has not received as
much attention and is a growing area of study. Many have recognized that
the Information technology (IT) occupation has a culture of its own, which
may be distinct from organizational and management cultures. In fact,
several researchers have attempted to qualitatively identify IT
subcultures, values, and various archetypes. What was lacking were
validated dimensions of IT occupational culture (ITOC) and an instrument to
measure them. Not anymore! Our research team has just published an
article which develops six dimensions of ITOC: Autonomy, Structure,
Precision, Innovation, Reverence for Knowledge, and Enjoyment (abbreviated
as ASPIRE). Here is the link: https://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=3184451.
IT Occupational Culture is an important stream of IS research. There are
many possibilities for further research utilizing ITOC, e.g., using it as
an antecedent in examining behaviors and performance, comparative
examination among various subgroups organizationally and internationally,
relating it to organizational and national culture, and so on. The full
instrument measuring IT occupational values is included in the paper and
researchers are welcome to contact either Prashant Palvia (pcpalvia at uncg.edu)
or Tim Jacks (tjacks at siue.edu) with questions about ITOC and the instrument.
