University of Tartu is calling for applications from highly promising
early-career researchers to fill a Junior Research Group Leader position
in the field of Data Analytics, interpreted broadly.
The successful applicant will create a new internationally competitive
research group starting with a seed grant of 1.25 million euros over
five years. The grant covers the salary of the group leader, two postdoc
positions, three PhD studentships, and other expenses for this initial
period.
Even though the initial seed grant is for five years, the Junior Group
Leader will be hired on an indefinite contract with the title of Senior
Research Fellow. University of Tartu is committed to open a professorial
position in an area matching the profile of the successful Junior Group
Leader in order to allow them to pursue a professorial career at the
University past their initial seeding period. The Junior Group Leader
will have a minimal teaching load (two contact hours per week maximum)
and will focus on developing an ambitious long-term research agenda in
any sub-field of data analytics.
The salary of the Junior Group Leader will be internationally
competitive: in the range of 3000-3500 euro per month plus access to the
national health and social security system, paid by the employer on top
of the salary. Estonia applies a flat income tax of 20%.
The ideal candidates for this position have:
- 4-7 years of postdoctoral experience
- High-quality publications in the finest venues in their specialty
- An ambitious long-term research vision
- Ability to attract prestigious grants and high-level funding in a
four-years horizon, such as an ERC Starting or Consolidator Grant, FET
project, DARPA project, or other substantial and prestigious grants.
University of Tartu is the leading research university in "new Europe"
(the EU-13 group of countries) by the Times Higher Education (THE)
regional ranking. Its Computer Science (CS) department is ranked in the
top-two in Central and Eastern Europe according to the field-specific
THE Ranking 2018. The department has around 100 staff members (out of
which a third are international) and is in a strong growth trajectory.
This Junior Group Leader position is part of a national strategic
funding initiative to boost the capacity and profile of computer science
research in Estonia over a long-term horizon.
