Northern Kentucky University invites applications for Chair of the Department of Business Informatics. The new chair will assume duties by July 1, 2019.
Located seven miles from downtown Cincinnati in an area offering outstanding quality of life, Northern Kentucky University is a nationally-recognized metropolitan public university enrolling over 14,000 students and actively engages with its region of nearly two million people. The university offers 79 undergraduate degree programs and master’s degrees in 22 disciplines, along with JD, DNP, and EdD doctoral degrees. NKU opened a new $97M interdisciplinary Health Innovation Center in 2018, where Business Informatics and Health Informatics faculty will play a key role in population health research, education, and outreach. In Fall 2019, the University of Kentucky will open a satellite campus of its School of Medicine at NKU.
The College of Informatics is one of six colleges in the university. It enrolls over 2,200 students in 12 bachelor’s programs and five master’s programs. It was formed in 2004 to unite faculty and students from all the information-centric disciplines. It is comprised of three departments: Business Informatics, Computer Science, and Communication. Over its history, enrollment in the college has doubled, and enrollment in its tech majors has tripled. Some of its distinctive majors include Data Science (only the third such BS program in the country when launched in 2013), Media Informatics, and Health Informatics, along with more traditional programs such as Computer Science, Communication Studies, and Journalism. Its outreach arm, the Center for Applied Informatics, received the Excellence and Innovation in Regional and Economic Development Award from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) in 2014, and the Chevron Award from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) in 2018. Cybersecurity is a particular strength. NKU has been designated as an NSA/DHS Center of Excellence in Cyber Defense Education since 2014, and its new $500K donor-funded Cyber Threat Intelligence Lab opened in 2018. The College of Informatics is located in Griffin Hall, a landmark building filled with beautiful and innovative learning spaces.
The Business Informatics department shares AACSB accreditation with the NKU Haile/US Bank College of Business. It offers BS degrees and undergraduate minors in Business Information Systems and in Health Informatics, and offers Masters of Business Informatics and Masters of Health Informatics degrees, as well as graduate certificates in these areas. The department collaborates with the College of Health professions to enhance and integrate its Health Informatics programs. In addition, the department operates as the academic home for the Library Informatics program. The department also provides extensive service courses for the university's BSBA and MBA programs. It currently has 17 full-time faculty.
For 2019, NKU has announced it will invest over $2.2M of new funds in programs around STEM and healthcare. This impacts nearly half of the programs in the College of Informatics, and Business Informatics and Health Informatics in particular. In addition to seeking a department chair, the Business Informatics department is also hiring tenure-track positions in Health Informatics and Business Analytics. The college has also opened new interdisciplinary positions in data visualization and user experience design this year.
NKU seeks a Business Informatics chair who will promote excellence in teaching and scholarship, maintain a focus on student success, and encourage transdisciplinary collaboration, innovative curricula, and experiential learning; these are the key hallmarks of the college. The duties of the Chair include: maintenance, development, and evaluation of innovative academic programs, personnel and budgetary management, responsibilities to students, mentoring and evaluating faculty, and a 1-1 teaching load (a 0-1 load the first year). The chair reports to the dean of the college and serves as a member of the college’s executive team.
Applicants must have a PhD or DBA in Information Systems or a closely related field from an AACSB accredited university. Applicants must also have a record of effective teaching and scholarly activity appropriate for appointment to either the Associate or Full Professor level at an AACSB accredited school, administrative experience in an academic environment, and highly effective communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to bring in external funding is desirable.
Northern Kentucky University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access/Affirmative Action institution. We embrace inclusiveness, equity, and global awareness in all dimensions of our work and seek excellence through diversity among our students, administrators, faculty, and staff. Application by members of diverse groups is encouraged.
Applicants should provide a cover letter outlining qualifications and interests, a detailed curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness, a list of three references with contact information, and a sample of research work. All candidates are also expected to submit a diversity statement. This statement should provide the candidate’s unique perspective on their past and present contributions to and future aspirations for promoting diversity, inclusion, and social justice in their professional career. In line with the University’s Affirmative Action Policy, candidates are not expected to disclose their identity or membership either in the diversity statement or in other application documents submitted to the search committee. Demographic information is solicited through the application process; however, those data are confidential and are not provided to members of the search committee.
