"Values and Ethics in the Digital Age"


Since the inception of the Internet, its reach and scale of application, as well as its impacts on our privacy have increased immensely. Current societal discourse indeed focuses on privacy and other issues concerning ethics in relation to digital technologies. As researchers, we are confronted with ethical choices in many situations, e.g., when applying for funding, in data collection and analysis, in collaboration with industry, and when making design decisions in intervention research. Taking a pragmatist stance, all actions concerning governance, design, and implementation of digital artifacts are related to values. There are no value-free actions. As much as designers attempt to embed the desired values into digital artifacts, their use may still bring about unintended consequences to different stakeholders which again reflect values different from the desired ones. This year's SIGPRAG pre-ICIS workshop aims at increasing our understanding of values and ethics in the digital age, and their implications for information systems research and design. We welcome submissions including, but not limited to, the following areas:

  *   The philosophy of ethics, e.g., virtue ethics, value ethics, and deontological ethics, and its implications for development, use, and management of digital resources
  *   Approaches to addressing values and ethics in design science research and other research approaches
  *   Philosophically grounded and practice-oriented papers addressing privacy, social sustainability, intersectionality, or other ethically oriented challenges that are prevalent in contemporary discourse
  *   Case descriptions including descriptions of and reflections on ethical conundrums and value trade-offs
  *   Value-driven design of digital artifacts
  *   Evaluation of digital artifacts focusing values, ethics, and consequences for different stakeholders
  *   Reflections on values and ethics in IS research


We especially welcome papers that address values and ethics from a pragmatist point of view. NB: We also welcome submissions following more 'traditional' SIGPRAG topics as outlined in last year's call for papers (see http://sigprag.net/icis2018/). We will adjust the structure of the workshop to the balance of accepted contributions.


Workshop purpose

This workshop is arranged in the same spirit and a continuation of earlier successful SIGPRAG workshops. This workshop intends to bring scholars and practitioners together for knowledge exchange and development on research foundations and practical contributions concerning the design and innovation of digital artifacts and practices. The workshop is a developmental arena with thoughtful and constructive feedback from reviews and comments on site. The workshop should be a place where you can present ideas in papers and get fruitful feedback for further development of the papers. A developmental arena means also taking responsibility for pushing contributions further to high-quality journal publications. From earlier SIGPRAG workshops many papers have been pushed further into special issues in the open-access journal Systems, Signs & Actions. At least one issue will be arranged in Systems, Signs & Actions inviting promising papers from this SIGPRAG workshop.

Submissions: October 4, 2019

Notification: November 1, 2019

Final manuscripts: November 30, 2019

Workshop: December 14, 2019

The workshop will follow an ordinary scientific procedure with a submission of papers and selection of papers through peer-review (pursued by an international program committee). We invite full paper submissions or submissions of extended abstracts (3-5 pages). Workshop papers are expected to be between 5–16 pages. We welcome full research papers as well as shorter papers (work-in-progress or position papers). For submissions, we use the EasyChair system (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=practdid2019). A format template can be found here<http://media.sigprag.net/2018/08/SIGPRAG-Format-Example-2018.docx>. Workshop proceedings will be digitally published and distributed if permitted by the author(s). There will be a small workshop fee covering catering.
