ICIS 2019 - Professional Development Workshop: Designing Experimental Studies

ICIS 2019 - Professional Development Workshop: Designing Experimental Studies - 18. December, 8:30 - 11:30 in Munich, Germany

Overview:

In the last years, experiments became more and more widely applied - be it in academic research or A/B testing in companies. This PDW (Professional Development Workshop) aims to expand the methodological tool kit of researchers with no or very basic training in experimental methods. Participants will learn how experiments can complement other research strategies and why they are an important part of the methods ecosystem. The workshop introduces the essentials of understanding and planning state-of-the-art experimental research both in the laboratory and the field. Advantages and disadvantages of different experimental designs as well as common pitfalls and challenges will be covered extensively. The practical application of the knowledge and skills acquired during the workshop will be the main goal. Hence, during several interactive segments, participants will have the opportunity to go through the process of designing an experiment step-by-step and to discuss questions that arise along the way.

Format:

The workshop consists of eleven segments covering the following topics:

1. Introduction

2. Experimental vs. Observational Studies

3. Essential Elements of Experiments

4. Experimental Manipulation

5. Control of Extraneous Variables

6. Random Assignment

7. Experimental Designs

8. External and Ecological Validity

9. Ethical Considerations

10. Data-Analytic Methods

11. Summary & Goodbye

Approximately every 30 minutes there will be an interactive segment. Participants will form small groups and directly apply their acquired knowledge by designing an experiment step-by-step. At the end of the workshop, a round of "speed-feedbacking" will give participants the opportunity to fine-tune their experimental designs as well as to practice their skills to evaluate experimental studies.

Submission Details:

To participate in the Professional Development Workshop interested participants are requested to sign up. Please write an email to <mailto:fenne.grosse.deters at uni-potsdam.de> fenne.grosse.deters at uni-potsdam.de and provide the following information: Name, Institution, Research Interests, Level of Experience with Experimental Research, Main Motivation to Participate in the Workshop. Moreover, before attending the workshop all participants are requested to think about a hypothesis they would like to test using an experiment.

The Workshop Organizers are looking forward to your participation and to welcome you in Munich,
