CFP: Minitrack on Managing the Dynamics of Platforms and Ecosystems

Part of Organizational Systems and Technology Track

HICSS-54 | January 5 – 8, 2021 | Grand Hyatt Kauai

Please notice that the deadline is extended to July 15, 2020.

We are very happy to invite papers and participation to our HICSS-54 minitrack of ‘Managing the Dynamics of Platforms and Ecosystems’. The minitrack follows our previous successful exploration of this topic at HICSS-49, HICSS-50, HICSS-51, HICSS-52, and HICSS-53.

It is well understood that, in order to compete and survive, organizations must consider platform- and ecosystem-centric perspectives. Indeed, many disruptive business models are driven and enabled by platforms and ecosystems. With the rapid emergence and proliferation of cloud services, artificial intelligence and 5G, new human-machine ecosystems are emerging; they bring new challenges and opportunities for management information systems and society.

Although understanding the value and importance of platforms and ecosystems across various industries and domains has grown significantly over the years, there is still a paucity of research examining the dynamic and evolutionary aspects.

For this year’s minitrack, we seek contributions that focus on the “dynamic” aspects of platforms and ecosystems. How do platforms and ecosystems change? What is the nature of their evolution? What are the mechanisms driving evolution? How do platforms and ecosystems adapt to technological, social, economic, or even political changes? How can specific platform and ecosystem actors succeed within these dynamics?

The minitrack seeks contributions that draw from diverse theoretical backgrounds such as management science, information systems, computer science, decision science, system science, organizational design, and behavioral economics to continue the scholarly exploration of concepts, theories, models, and tools for managing platforms and ecosystems. We are open to a wide set of methodological approaches including empirical research, case-based research, field studies, design science, and behavioral decision-making experiments. We encourage collaboration between academia and industry and welcome submissions from both industries and geographies.

For the minitrack call, we encourage topics of interest associated with such inquiries and beyond:

* Theories, models, and empirical studies of platform and ecosystem dynamics

* Genesis of platforms and ecosystems, including the role of boundary resources, human relationships and data

* Platforms and ecosystems for sustainable firm innovation

* Platforms for digital twins

* Evolving platform and ecosystem business models

* Mechanisms driving the dynamics, growth, and evolution of platforms and ecosystems

* Technological and competitive disruption in ecosystems

* Dynamic analytics, visualization, and decision support for platform and ecosystems

* Best practices in platform and ecosystem management

* Orchestration strategies for platforms and ecosystem

* Case studies of successes, failures, and unintended consequences of platforms and ecosystems
