XP 2022 - 23rd International Conference on Agile Software Development
June 13-17, 2022
Copenhagen, Denmark
https://www.agilealliance.org/xp2022/
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
XP is the premier Agile software development conference combining research and practice. It is a unique forum where Agile researchers, practitioners, thought leaders, coaches, and trainers get together to present and discuss their most recent innovations, research results, experiences, concerns, challenges, and trends. Whether you are new to Agile or a seasoned Agile practitioner, XP 2022 will provide an informal environment to learn and trigger discussions.
While the XP conference originally focused on eXtreme Programming and pre-dated the Agile Manifesto, XP 2022 solicits contributions that address all modern Agile approaches as well as the application of Agile to applications including (but not limited to) FinTech, AI/ML, IoT, and other mission-critical systems with global reach.
Agile methods originally favored small, co-located teams, emphasizing face-to-face interaction. While Agile methods have since been successfully scaled up to large and distributed projects, we are now facing new challenges in the Era of Hybrid Work. The Covid-19 pandemic has served as a catalyst of this trend. Hybrid work brings new challenges: not quite distributed, and not quite co-located, but rather individual developers working from anywhere, and touching base in the office intermittently. Thus, the theme for XP 2022 is "Agile in the Era of Hybrid Work."
LOCATION
The XP 2022 conference will be organized in the IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) (https://en.itu.dk/), which is Denmark's leading university focusing on IT research and education. ITU is located in the center of Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, and with a short reach to the Copenhagen International Airport.
PHYSICAL EVENT
We are planning to organize XP2022 entirely as a physical event in Copenhagen. As the previous two editions of the XP conference were virtual, we expect that a physical event will generate benefits by bringing people together. If the circumstances change due to Covid-19 developments, the event may become a hybrid or a virtual one.
Topics of Interest include but are not limited to the following, in Agile and Lean contexts:
- Agile in the era of Covid-19
- Business and startups
- Business and enterprise agility
- Diversity & Inclusion in Agile
- Education and training
- Emerging topics and future directions
- Empirical studies and evaluations
- Engineering and management
- Foundations and conceptual studies

PROGRAM
XP 2022 will consist of a 5-day program with sessions that feature research papers, experience reports, keynotes, panels, workshops, lightning talks, journal-first paper presentations, and industry events.
SUBMISSIONS
Submissions solicited below will be reviewed by the Program Committee based on relevance, significance, rigor, novelty, replicability, and quality. In some cases, submissions that have been accepted will be subject to shepherding by a designated Program Committee member.
SUBMISSION TYPES
Research Papers
We invite submissions of unpublished high-quality research papers, full (15 pages) and short (8 pages), related to Agile and Lean software development. Full papers should present completed research that clearly addresses a research problem and documents the details and results of a study. Short papers (up to 8 pages) are expected to communicate emerging research results and/or trends that have potential to be further developed. Such papers may also present a vision on a given topic that addresses long-term challenges and opportunities that is thoroughly justified, or clearly related to prior literature. Submissions addressing topics across the full spectrum of Agile software development, broadly on Agile, on issues of concern to researchers or practitioners or both are welcomed.
Research Workshop Proposals
We invite proposals for full or half-day scientific workshops on topics related to Agile, and welcome existing and new workshop topics.
Experience Reports
This is an opportunity to share practical experience through a paper and an accompanying talk. An experience report is a reflection of personal industry experiences including challenges seen, approaches taken - and what worked or didn't. Submit an abstract with a brief unpublished experience. Accepted proposals will be shepherded.
Industry and Practice
We invite proposals for engaging and experimental sessions oriented towards practitioners. Rather than presentations, we favor mini-workshops, demonstrations, and interaction based on your experience and practice from working in the industry. Please excite and surprise us! Sessions can be either 30, 60 or 90 minutes, or half-day for in-depth workshops/tutorials.
Agile in Education and Training
This track will provide a forum for those with a vested interest in Agile education and training to share ideas for translating methods, practices, and theory into trainings, courses, curricula, and mentoring programs. We are looking for papers, talks, demos and activities, on techniques and experiences for teaching and training any facet of Lean and Agile software development, concerning also remote and hybrid approaches.
Diversity & Inclusion in Agile
This track welcomes short research papers from both researchers and practitioners widely under the topic of diversity and inclusion in agile software development. In addition, we invite experience cases and best practices from practitioners in the form of talks or interactive sessions.
Journal First Track
XP 2022 has partnered with leading software engineering journals (TOSEM, EMSE, JSS, IST) to incorporate journal-first papers into the program. Through this initiative, authors of journal-first papers accepted in the partnering journals will be invited to present their work at the conference, providing an opportunity for the authors to engage directly with the community and contribute to the research component of the conference.
Agile Games
We invite proposals for Agile game sessions, as well as experiences on training and teaching with Agile games.
Lightning Talks
We invite proposals for lightning talks that describe novel and/or relevant experiences, opinions, or ideas on Agile topics. They can be used to generate inspiration, discussion, or as wake-up calls.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Research Papers: Abstract February 7, Paper February 14, 2022
Research Workshop Proposals: December 17, 2021
Full calls and submission deadlines of the other tracks will be published in December at the conference website: https://www.agilealliance.org/xp2022/
