While in the last 15 years more qualitative papers have been published in the IS Senior Scholar Basket of journals, publishing qualitative studies remains challenging. In particular, early-career academics often struggle to publish their qualitative papers in top IS journals.

This workshop is designed to help early career academics and PhD students working on qualitative papers relating to technology and organization studies across the IS, strategy and organization behaviour domains, to develop their journal articles to a stage where they can submit to a top IS journal. Early career researchers and PhD students that are in the final stages of their PhD (i.e., already collected and analyzed their data) will be in best position to benefit from this Workshop.

The team of six mentors was put together based on their extensive experience publishing qualitative articles is the top IS journals, as well as serving in editorial roles in top IS journals.

Workshop format:
· Three-day event from 4-6 October 2022.
· Interactive sessions, discussions and ‘sprint’ writing sessions facilitated by the mentors.
· Designed to allow time for feedback, discussions and writing, and informal interactions with the mentors.
· The workshop is limited to 18 participants (3 per mentor)

Before the workshop:
Interested participants are expected to submit a paper to be allocated to a mentor who will review and provide feedback. In addition, each participant will review and provide feedback for one paper within their “working group”.
During the event:
Participants will be working in small groups based on topic proximity guided by a mentor. There will be three points of feedback: at the beginning of the event based on the submitted paper, after first day, and at the end of the event. Participants will need to make significant progress during the Workshop as part of the time will be allocated to writing and further refinement of ideas (we coined this approach “sprint writing”).

There will be three formal plenary sessions, one each day. The rest of the time, the participants will be closely working with mentors on improving ideas and re-writing their papers. In-between “sprint writing” sessions, mentors will run interactive “clinics” within their working groups that will be dedicated to specific issues identified during the process of writing and relevant to all/most group members. During the afternoon coffee break, mentors will discuss issues that their groups are facing and agree whether or not a plenary cross-group “clinic” is needed at the end of the day.

We will hold two social dinners to facilitate interactions between all participants and the mentors (in particular with mentors from other work group).

Admission criteria:

To ensure that participants are fully committed and are able to make significant progress during the Workshop in preparing their paper for a journal submission, we will be looking for the following:
1. A draft of the paper, at least 70% complete (i.e., some sections may be more developed then others but overall 70% of the paper is written) (deadline September 1 2022).
Suggested structure for your submission:
A title and 200 word abstract
½ page on the practical motivation for your work
1 page on problematization of the existing knowledge that leads to your RQ
2 pages on the specific qualitative approach you use, including data collection and analysis
1 page on upfront theory
1 page on the case highlighting what is revelatory about your case – in other words, why should we be excited about your case?
1 page on empirical findings
1 page on theoretical contributions you seek to offer
½ page on practical and design implications (if any)

2. In addition to the draft of the paper, we are requesting applicants to provide a short letter explaining what journal (s)he is targeting with this paper, and the main challenges that they face with regard to the current version. If the paper was previously submitted to a conference (for example, International Conference on Information Systems), please include in your submission the review packet from the conference.

We will be reviewing submissions as we receive them and making acceptance decisions for submissions that met the requirements to help applicants who need to book travel well in advance. Please email your submission to j.kotlarsky at auckland.ac.nz<mailto:j.kotlarsky at auckland.ac.nz> with email subject “Submission for Qualitative Paper Development Workshop”.
